Started having problems with my Speedometer. Was working fine but doesn't move now. When I start the bike it is reseting (clicks to 160mph then back to 0). Tach and everything else works fine. Anyone have any ideas??? |

If it still sweeps when you turn the key on then it sounds like your speedo sensor is bad. |

Yes, get a service manual...there is a whole procedure to go through for testing the speed sensor and speedometer to help troubleshoot the problem. I'd start by pulling the sensor and cleaning it off, reinstall and test. They are magnetic, and sometimes pick up metal bits that prevent them from working properly. If you don't have a service manual, go get one....they are invaluable. |

Here's the pages, I would still start with pulling and cleaning the sensor, then do this stuff: For those that don't have a service manual...get one! This is the good stuff you are missing out on |

Too bad it pretty much requires a "special" speedometer tester thingy. I'm sure it could be made with a 555 timer to send pulses, but a little more needs to be known. A cheap oscilloscope would also make it easy to check the speed sensor to see if it is sending pulses and what voltage those pulses happened to be. |

The original 2003 speedo sensors were problematic. Replace it, $60 and never worry again |

The original 2003 speedo sensors were problematic. True that, I lived with and without one for over a year |

I say, if you are going to take the time to clean it, might as well replace it while it is out since the 03 are known to have problems. |

i hate to be obvious, but charge the battery. I had my gauges go out on me while riding, and then about 15 min later the battery died. This was all related to a fried stator thanks to connector 44? |

Don't think it's a battery problem. I've been driving it a week now with no speedometer. |

Well, had to stop at the dealership for brakepads and they happened to have a sensor on hand so just went ahead and picked one up. Hopefully I can get some time to install it tomorrow. |

The wire on the sensor has a sharp 180 deg bend. My experience is that this is suspect with age on the wire. I have had the problem a few times and got it working by cleaning the sensor (and moving the wire around in the process) but the last time I simply wiggled the wire and it started working...has for the past 5 months so far this time around. I will buy another sensor at some point though. What did the dealer charge on the new one? |

Dang didn't get here soon enough, BUT the 2008 Sportster speed will work on the 03-04 XB motors(dont know bout later models). The only difference is it has a longer cable. The better part is that it is half the price of the stock piece. And mine has been on there for 4 years. |

So if the 08 sporty part is only $30, maybe I better get one for my parts stash. I think we need to find a way to cross reference all the different Harley parts that fit and work on our Buells, someday it might be very important. |

Thats a good idea, another is the IAT sensor. I used one, I believe it was for a Focus. I worked at Autozone and just started looking through all the boxes till I found one that looked similar then cross its' specs. Been so long ago i don't remember the details though |

Wish I had known about the Sportster part. I did get the sensor changed out with a new one and all is good. It did almost have a graphite like coating on it so most likely an issue with it being dirty but I changed it out anyways. |

Bad ground (system) or loose connector on the ECM. |

Glad to see all this. Mine crapped out last night. Going to work at the HD stealership tomorrow. Will be picking up a sporty unit and swapping. Nice that it lasted till after my 500 mile ride. |

Unless y boss screwed up (i didnt look at the book yet) an 08 sporty sensor will not work on 03 xb. the 08 sporty sensor he got me has 2 mounting holes and NO cable on it. Taking them back to the shop tomorrow to find out whats the right and whats the wrong... |
