Received my new pump gas 1125CR ECM from Erik Buell Racing the other day. Using the service manual I began to do the installation. Got to the point of removing the lock nut from the stud that the ECM mounts on. Nut gets within two threads of removal when the stud started to spin. The stud's ultrasonic weld had broken. The flexloc nut has prevailing torque over the weld. Of course now the nut is not going anywhere. I thought I was taking it slow and easy but it was not easy enough. It is time for my bike's 1000km service so I'll let the dealer deal with it and hopefully under warranty. Many thanks to Michael at Erik Buell Racing for his assistance and offer of parts. The guy is top drawer. |

Duly noted, and thank you for that. I'll be sure to be careful when removing mine when my E-B-R ECM comes in today. BTW, what size are the locknuts? I'm going to install my ECM when I go to pick up Ginger at the dealership later this week ... she's there for the clutch cover gasket and they just ordered the parts ... they should have a bunch of kits on hand since it's so common. Guess not. I just don't feel like bringing} all my sockets with me, though I'm sure it's between a 8-12mm hex, correct? (Message edited by jeepinbueller on May 26, 2010) |

Yes that's about right but I don't remember the exact size. I'm at work and the bike is at home taking the day off. I'll try and get back to you with the correct size later today. By the way, I spoke with the service manager at my dealer and he said it may not be a warranty item since I wrenched it but they will take a look at it and we'll discuss. They are good people and like Buells so I remain hopeful. Personally I think that weld would have broken no matter who was wrenching that flexloc nut. |

anti seize compound is the easiest way to thread something in smoothly. It is so smooth you will know in no uncertain terms if it is even slightly off before you even get started. |

If the stud spins, you can (carefully) slot or flatten the end of the stud just enough to grip it or use a screwdriver to keep it from spinning while you back off the 10mm nut. The nut spins pretty easy on mine once I break it from seat. If you can't get to the stud from the back side (I can't remember whether you can or not), superglue is a possible solution to reduce stud spin on reassembly. You only have to just snug up the nut, not tighten, to keep the ECM in place. The joys of wrenching.... |

When I installed my race ECM, I found the stud was brass, and I could reach behind, through the radiator cowl, to hold it stable with my fingers. |
