I work on my dads farm one day a week and he lives 101 miles from my house. Ive been meaning to do a full fuel economy run up and back by froggys methods posted in another thread. Today I did. I wouldnt have believed it if I had not done it myself but I averaged 56 mpg on the cluster. I currently have 208 miles on it and the fuel light has still not come on. I wouldnt say I did anything all that radical either. I rode tucked the whole way and kept it at the speed limit or slightly less. On a few long downhills I pulled in the clutch and just coasted. On the uphills I would try not to let the instant meter go below 45mpg. No brakes. I coasted up to every turn and full leaned through so I didnt have to accelerate much to get back up to speed. I think I could have done better without the backpack. I could feel it pulling around a little.

Rpm4x4 your personal discipline is to be admired.

Is trying to get highway mileage your best concern at this time. With 208 miles on the odometer a good breakin strategy might more important than mileage. What is your breakin strategy?

I meant on the fuel trip odo. I have over 5K on the bike.

I applaud your restraint, I might try to do something similar at some point... I don't think I'll manage but I might just try.

Do you think it'll have an impact on your riding going forward or is that "experiment over" now LOL

I also applaud your efforts. How you can go the speed limit in a full-tuck is beyond me.

I just made a trip to and from El Paso on my CR, 282 miles one way. On the way there I got 42 mpg with a 35 - 40 mile an hour head wind. On the way back I got 51 mpg. I was going 80 to 85 (speed limit is 80) always smooth and constant with the throttle. I rode full tuck the whole way except a 50 to 60 mile stretch that was too hot, AT was reading 101 at 80 mph. Higher mileage should be easy for someone with an R, no west Texas wind, and lower speed.

The CR would be harder to obtain the same MPG due to the lack of a faring (not like the R a much better 'flow') and the shorter gear ratio keeping the bike 8% higher in RPM.

I get in the 40's without really trying very hard. It gets better mileage consistantly now than my FJR does...just like my M2 did.

I got in the 40's riding with a bunch of bikes. By myself, I seem to get about 32. Too much fun doing the full acceleration out of a turn thing....

Speed limit of 80mph.. wow, I'm jealous. I wouldn't have to worry about getting speeding tickets on the interstate if friggin' Illinois would bump up its "make us some money taxing speeders" 65mph limit.

I don't pay too much attention to the instantaneous mileage, but I think it almost never goes over 50 even when cruising.

Totally agree. Gotta love the "public safety" and energy conservation arguments to keeping speed limits low. BUllshit. It's so they can write more speeding tickets.

Fresno MUST be broke cause now the motorcycle cops (ie ticket writing POS) are out after dark. Great! More enforcement of artificially low speed limits around the City. F the government!

Geforce, I haven't found a single one but there are some rarely traveled farm roads southwest of Mcamey that I discovered by accident a few years back. I had a real blast in my mustang and can't wait to try them on the cr. Will you have your bike with you?

That's amazing, the best I seem to get with mine is around 27 mpg at a steady 100 mph, lol.

I doubt it will have an impact on my driving style. In all honesty I thought Froggy was fudging his numbers a little. I dont think he is anymore. I just had to know deep down if it was possible and what its like to ride like that. Its like an endurance test for your personal discipline. I am going to do it a few more times just to see if I can beat those numbers. Its kinda fun in a sick way LOL

West Tx, Yes, the wife and I are trying to figure out how we can get both bikes down there and do a little riding while Grandpa watches the kiddo for a day. We'll see.

Congrats.

I find you can't go by the average meter, it always shows a lower than what i really get meter.

Does your fuel contain 10% ethanol? Using E10 will drop your fuel economy a bit, but thats all we get in the north east so I am stuck with the slight fuel economy penalty.

I got my Erik Buell Racing ECM on the other day, the numbers are looking great. On my CR loaded up with tankbag and a tall pile of junk on the rear seat making it impossible for me to tuck in, I am still easily able to maintain high 50's MPG on the highway instead of high 40s with the stock ECM. Too soon to see actual numbers, I need to get a few tanks under the belt : )
