What all does this entail? I know that I will have to swap my fork legs and kick stand. I also know that if I swap from my 05 suspension to a newer one I will have to swap my lower trees for the thicker tubes. For the rear do I just need to switch out the springs or do I need to swap out the whole shock? Also do I need to switch the lines for my front brake or are they long enough? Any help would be welcomed. Im also in the Seattle/Portland area if anyone is interested.

i'm considering the same swap. Does anyone here know about this swap?

I've just helped a couple of people do the reverse. You need to swap the whole shock and not just the spring.

The front brake line is the same part number for '08 on all models except the STT, so that should be OK. Clutch cable the same, (later clutch cables fit all including STT), so that should work.

what's the latest on this subject, guys? I'm looking into this myself. stopping by the stealership this afternoon to talk to the resident Buell expert (glad to have one nearby)

I'll post back with my findings, and am planning to document the swap if I go through with it.

my understanding is that the differences between the Scg/SX are:

Fork
Rear Shock
Bars
Deflectors
Stand
Seat

I've compiled a list of parts and numbers for the XB12Scg to XB12S(X) conversion:

Triple Clamp Assy, lower w/stem -- J0106.3A8AZT
Front Fork Assy, Left -- J0121.6AAZT
Front Fork Assy, Right -- J0122.6AAZT
Rear Shock Assy -- K0410.02A8
Sidestand Leg Assy -- L0167.5A8
Handlebar -- N0037.1AJYCX

I think it also requires the lower steering head bearing, as well.

Hi Msgvb

Judging by the part numbers and the bars you are planning on going black. The triple clamp lower will be black and your upper will be alloy. You may want to make them both the same. Black forks with the alloy triple clamps looks OK. That is a J0106.3A8A for an alloy lower or J0105.4ADYT for a black upper.

You shouldn't need to change the steering head bearings just for the suspension mod. They are the same for both the S and the Scg.

I'm not sure about the side-stand. I think you could need a 2007 which is an L1167.02A8. That may supersede to your number but it is probably safest to order the earlier number and see if it is superseded. The 2007 will fit and has the service modification. I'm not sure that there aren't differences in the later side-stand.

I haven't checked the other part numbers but they seem right from memory.

sorry, yes I should have mentioned that all part numbers listed here are out of the 2010 XB12 parts catalog. my application is for all black, yes.

steering head bearings were recommended by tech at HD, at least the one that's pressed onto the lower triple shaft? any experience with this?

most of the parts used in the swap are specced for the XB9/12SX

What is the year model you are converting?

If it is pre-08 the sidestands are different part numbers. If it is you may also want to look at the colours of the upper triple clamp and the bar clamp.

I don't understand why you would need to change the lower bearing on a bike that new, but if a specialist tells you to you should think about it.

Only one of the bikes I helped with the conversion changed the steering head bearings, but it was a 2004 and they were changing them just because the bike was apart at the time.

that's probably partly why he was saying to change them. we didn't really have a lengthy discussion about whether to change the bearings, but I think the assumption is that when people are doing fork work it's probably not on a new bike, and then, like you said, it probably just makes sense to do them when it's apart.

I've seen some pretty gnarly photos of the lower bearing and shaft though in photos of forks that're off. I wonder if maybe working with the bearing, pulling it off the shaft, pressing it back on... don't know... maybe that's just meant to be a one time on type deal due to deformation/tolerances?

I'll get more information from the HD tech and report back when I actually get the parts on order.

Pete, so what did you do to suspend the bike during this procedure, anyway? did you guys use one of those motorcycle lifts, and one of those wood block cradles set up to support the bike by the exhaust? it surprise me to read that you can jack the bike and support it by the exhaust.

Friends posted up a video of fitting a kit they got off me.

If you have a stock muffler you can support it in a rear stand and lift it at the jacking point marked on the muffler.

It was a big success for Jac. She's struggled it a bit with the height after swapping from a Cagiva to a City-X. Now it's perfect.

Ive got an 09 xb9sx that i want to lower,if anyone wants to raise there scg,i will trade you my parts for yours,ive got less than 100 miles on this front end,so it is all but new,really interested in 09 trade or above as our front end is all black and as mentioned befor,all but new.Im just trying to get my girls feet on the ground

Just following up on this. I've completed the Scg to SX suspension swap, and there is no need to change the steering head bearings. furthermore, they are pressed into the frame; nothing is pressed onto the lower triple shaft.
