I have a 2009 CR with the 152 flash installed (since December), and I've just recently had the charging harness and Cali can installed.

I personally think the bike runs great. It makes smooth power from 2500 rpms, AFV's are 105 front and rear, and runs with coolant temps from 165 - 195 degrees F. Also, I've de-noided the bike, installed a Drummer muffler, and I'm still using the stock air filter.

Does anyone have any experience upgrading from the CR 152 flash to the Erik Buell Racing Pump Gas ECM? Is it a worthwhile upgrade?

Thanks!

yes, i had the 152 flash on my cr, it ran well before i got the race ecm, then i picked up the race ecm with an fmf pipe, and it now runs like a scaled dog. same smoothness as before, but my butt dyno says more top rpm. plus, with the race ecm, it will NOT activate the noid when going balls to the wall in third gear. i love the race ecm, but was satisfied in stock set up/ exhaust wise, with the stock ecm.

I went from the 152 flash to the Ebr Race ECM and noticed the low throttle openings are much smoother, you can cruise at 3K RPM without surging. The bottom end torque has been traded for more mid-range torque. From 5K to 8K is a noticable difference in torque and overall power, extreme top end feels the same. Seems to run a little cooler and mileage per gallon has picked up a little, probably due to the low RPM throttle smoothness now. Definately money well spent.

It should...

The fueling on the street ECMs is a (fairly bad) compromise. Drivability is negotiable. EPA emissions laws are not. So, drivability suffers to meet the EPA regs - see solenoid, see "absurdly lean," etc.

The race ECM has no such EPA regs to deal with - it can fuel and spark the engine as needed for optimum drivability. You're no longer meeting EPA regs, and obviously would *never* consider using this ECM on the street, because that would be illegal tampering of emissions equipment! ; )

But the contrast should be significant. Look at the AFRs for the stock ECU vs the race ECU (or just the fueling maps) - the stock ECU runs significant lean at a number of points in the throttle map to meet emissions.

... and I'll stop here before I go into rich of peak/lean of peak operation and ideal fueling curves, but if anyone is interested I can link to a huge variety of information on the topic - focused on aircraft engine operation, but the exact same principles and operation apply to *any* gasoline powered motor.

Part of my reason for asking specifically about the CR 152 flash vs. the Erik Buell Racing ECM was that the CR 152 flash emerged in November of 2009 (read: after the shut down). I've only read good things about it and have good experience with it personally.

In the chaos of the shut down, I was secretly hoping that the 152 flash is *almost* a Race ECM flash that got slipped in under the radar. When I hook my bike up to ECMSpy, the firmware and calibration ID's actually use the word "race" in their descriptions.

What I am hoping to get out of this is detailed feedback from those who have gone from the 152 flash to the Erik Buell Racing Pump Gas ECM.

All the flashes say race! I'm sure someone can pull the eeprom for the race ecm, then you can compare them using ecmspy.

Thanks Bueller, I was not aware that they all said race. I knew it was too good to be true : )

Installed Erik Buell Racing ECM and rode for about 30miles. Not much different from stock 152 flash for RPM less than 6000, other than lower engine braking for Erik Buell Racing ECM.

Do we think performance improvement using the E_B_R ECM with the stock exhaust is worth the money?

Just installed my E_B_R ECM today. All I can say is WOW!!!

I thought my low RPM driveability was good before, but now I can smoothly putt around in first gear with absolutely no throttle.

It's butter smooth, pulls like a freight train, and I actually really like the reduced engine braking.

I guess I've answered my own question. If you have a CR with 152 flash, the E_B_R ECM is ABSOLUTELY a worthwhile upgrade.

With that said, I'm in! I liked that A S R approached this objectively, wondering if it was worth the money. As I've been running the latest '09R flash which I was perfectly happy with, I was wondering that same thing.

My 49-state bike also has the denoid resistor, the Cali can, and the harness upgrade. Still not sure about sacrificing the engine braking, but I might try it out of the box just to compare ...

Millenium, I was on the fence about the engine braking too. But now that it's reduced (it's not totally gone), it really makes up and down shifts much smoother as the motor doesn't plummet to idle like it did with the stock ECM. There seems to be a couple second dwell at any given RPM when I roll off the throttle.

It's everything I never knew I always wanted : )

I have a Drummer with the 'DB killer'. It's exactly the sound and volume I was looking for.

And it sounds more extra gooder at idle with the E_B_R ECM.

For info I have a 2009 model 1125R with the Erik Buell Racing pump gas ECM, K&N filter and at the moment a HPE race can (Buell race system to be added later in the year).
Bike has never run better all round and I don't miss the engine braking, bike is extremely load but sounds great

A S R, thanks for all the sanity check input for those of us happy with stock, and therefore on the fence. Did you request a lower idle RPM or just take it as pre-programmed from Erik Buell Racing?

No prob on the sanity check.

I didn't specifically request a lower idle, but last I heard they were delivering all of them with a 1400 RPM idle. It's definitely got that lopey uneven cammed-up sounding idle now.

Has anyone used the Erik Buell Racing ECM with a stock exhaust? Would the stock exhaust cause any heartache?

Jjr1125, I'll let you know shortly. Placed the order today. I've read a good deal about Erik's new ECM, and there is a version for the stock exhaust which I plan on retaining.

Well, Erik Buell Racing certainly has done it! Starts making more power at about 8000 rpm to a max of about 6 HP at 9000, then about 3HP at 10,500. Also much smoother in areas that don't show on a dyno power pull. And of course turns off the solenoid.

Totally cool - most assuredly looking forward to mine's arrival! Now that's product improvement on a major level, and at the same time promotes longevity. Sweet! Again thank you Erik Buell Racing!

I take it use of this ECM would void the warranty? Or do you just swap the stock one back in if the bike needs warranty work?

You should swap the stock one anyway, regardless of warranty, because they might try to flash it.
