I rode from Ontario to Michigan and back this weekend with a Thumb Ride in between. Here are my tracks for the weekend, about 800 miles. First pic of the day, still wet and foggy I headed west to the shores of lake Huron Then south to the Border Sarnia/Port Huron Once on the Us side I found the first available dirt road and continued west Lots of good dirt roads in Michigan, although some had a few huge potholes and washed out areas Went for a ride with 11 other bikes (harleys) so I won't bore you with the pics Except for this one The one pic on the way home

Nice, I did a thumb ride from Lansing around then up through the U.P. and back down. Was a bunch of fun. |

I grew up all over between Saginaw and Gaylord and my family use to hill climb down in Port Huron. Although I miss the lakes, it would be hard to get me to leave Colorado now. Stay safe. |

I intend to be passing through the Michigan UP, then down through the LP after Homecoming. What parts is the "thumb"? Thanks. --Doc |

If you're going through the UP stay up that way longer as opposed to doing the thumb trip IMO. The UP has some amazing places like copper harbor and great rides all throughout. The Thumb was an OK trip but the UP or even better, Canada north of superior (specifically the road that goes from Deluth MN to Sault ste. Marie is an awesome ride. Highway 11 then to Highway 17 in Canada. |

Vern Uly = Perfect touring bike for me One more pic, looks like I don't quite want to join the Harley Pack. I met some great Michiganders on the weekend and had a great time. |

The UP has some amazing places like copper harbor and great rides all throughout... Yes, thanks. I actually interviewed at Michigan Tech (Houghton) in July 1976 (decided to come to UNM in Albuquerque) and the ME Department Chairman drove me up to Copper Harbor and beyond. Beautiful country (in July). This SoCal kid would've died up there. --Doc P.S. Funny story about that interview trip that made me see the light; if you'll be at Homecoming ask me about it... |

Dr_greg I live in the eastern U.P.Sault Saint Marie area, my chick and I will be at homecoming it would be a pleasure to ride back north with you. All the good roads around here are dirt or sand. |

I live in the eastern U.P.Sault Saint Marie area, my chick and I will be at homecoming it would be a pleasure to ride back north with you. Thanks, but I'm actually going from East Troy to visit my relatives in northern WI, then heading up to the UP. If our routes/times permit, we might still be able to ride together. Bear in mind, however, that I am used to riding alone, and am not used to socializing... --Doc |

Those boots look like Alpinestars Scouts, yes? If so, what do you think? Good for all-around road touring? Comfortable for daily walking-around? Waterproof? Easy to get on/off? Great shots...I'm itching to get out on a long trip. |

Hooper Thanks for the comments Re the Scouts -Good for all around touring? Yes -Comfortable for daily walking around? not so much they are stiff and have loosend up a little but I would not want to walk a mile in them. -Waterproof? Yes in a hard 4 hour rain ride -Easy to get on and off? depends on what you call easy, more work but doable, I don't wear them to get milk |

That was the best review of the Scouts I've read: they look awesome, they're pretty safe, they're waterproof, but they're not something you'd want to hike around in, and they're not what you'd throw on to grab lunch on Sunday. Very useful. I might get them to add to my long-trip set. |

Ah, go ahead, Pete, flaunt that new 2010 wheel that you got ON WARRANTY! I don't think I'll ever see a post from you when I'm not reminded of that! Hey, jealousy is hell but I'm really happy for you. Great pictures and very cool ride. Thanks for sharing. I really like that area and want to get back up to Mackinac Island and the UP. Thanks. |
