After reading all the stator threads I feared the worst when I started having voltage issues a week after harness upgrade. I called my dealer's shop with some multimeter readings and he thought it was the battery. He suggested I jumpstart my now dead Buell and take it in. I didn't like the sound of that, so after I got off the phone I went to Batteries Plus and bought a new one. When I tried to replace it I found that the positive lead was almost totally unscrewed. After I trickle charged it and tightened it the problem went away. Now I have 2 questions, how do I keep a battery until I need it again. (charged, drained, frozen?) and which is most likely. 1) it was done accidentally when the harness was put on. 2) it was done intentionally at H-D or 3) it was done intentionally by my regular mechanic when he changed my rear tire. If I am any judge of character it wasn't 3, he's a great guy with a lot of talent. | ||

I would bet on accidental or just bad luck of a bolt backing out. | ||

On the XB's it was common for the battery screws to be a hair too tall and would bottom out on the battery before the head makes good contact, and it can cause all kinds of funky issues till you put a washer under the screws. Sometimes this situation combined with the air cooled motors vibrations can cause the screw to back out. I have never heard of either of these happening on the 1125, but its not impossible. As for your new battery, best is to return it and hope you can get a refund. The chemicals slowly break down inside the battery, its going to slowly die regardless of what you do. | ||

I use a star washer on my battery connections. I find they dig nicely into those copper and aluminum electrical connections and prevent the bolt backing out. | ||

Most likely, the tech doing the harness update just forgot to retighten the battery bolt. I believe they pull the ground while doing the update - no arcs/sparks. That happens once in a while, even at good shops. No conspiracy expected. Z | ||

That bolt can also vibrate loose. Happened to me. To store the battery if you are stuck with it, probably best to sell it to somebody who DOES need it now. If you have to keep it, buy a battery tender (the harbor freight unit seems to work OK) and store it in a temperature controlled environment and leave the tender running. Vibration, charge and discharge cycles, deep discharge, and heat cycles are all things that "wear out" a battery. Note the battery tender is different then just an old fashioned trickle charger... |
