Open airbox, breather reroute. And heres what I've done to the can: Cut off at front weld of the stainless "tip" (so about 4 inches shorter). Then cut in half at the front jack point (right in front on the front inner bulkhead) Gutted everything, and trimmed inlet pipe so it only protrudes into can about a half inch. Then where I cut it in half we welded in a wall with only a 1 inch vertical slit. So the front of the can is a big hollow chamber. Behind that slit is a series of forward and rear facing "vee" baffles similar to what you would see inside a flowmaster muffler. And behind those it splits into dual tracts which dump out of dual tips.
I know I'm probably pretty lean, and I have looked at the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM, but it is out of stock for my bike. Not sure when/if it will be in stock again.
Have talked to Al at American Sportbike at length about this and he says I shouldn't use any of his maps because my pipe is a one off piece and there is know telling what may be wrong in one of those maps for my pipe. He also said that the Erik Buell Racing ECM probably isn't even the best thing for it. I have looked into ECMSpy, but I dont have the correct computer OS (Windows 7) and frankly I am not confident in my knowledge(lack there of)of what needs to be done to tune it myself. I ahve read through a couple tuning guides thoroughly and it just doesn't click. Al also pointed me towards JT&S down in Sonoma, CA. I like the idea of just biting the bullet and throwing it on a dyno, but they are a long way from home. I live in Spokane, WA. Does anybody know of a tuner (a competent, and experienced Buell tuner) closer to me? Oregon somewhere, or even Seattle, WA?
And what is the consensus on me riding the bike in its current state? Super harmful? Or okay for putting around town? Thanks for any help!!

It won't hurt it to ride it like that. You may experience some deceleration popping from the bike being lean. You will need to read each guide several times and get familiar with ECMSpy and MegaLog Viewer before any of it will start to make sense. If ECMSpy works on Vista, I don't see why it wouldn't on Windows 7. You will need to turn off user access control in Windows.

I do notice (now that I'm not just listening to the pipe with childlike joy) that it does have a bit of decel popping. No backfire-ish loud pops or anything though, kinda sounds cool to me. And I notice a little bit of pinging if I hold WOT and let it wind up a bit.

So if I read and understand things right in the tuning guide, the jist of it is that I ride and log with ecmspy (logging in megalog format), then I open the log file it creates in the megalog folder within the ecmspy directory with the megalog viewer program. Then run the analyzer and it will modify the maps. And then you can save those new maps and load them to the ecm? I'm supposed to look for any erroneous numbers too right? What am I looking for that might be a bad number?

I guess I get it basically, I'm just scared to do it. Never done anything like this. I'm smart, just a bit ignorant of all things electrical when it comes to the automotive realm. Does megalog viewer help you out with both cylinders? I don't have anything other than the stock narrow band sensor, and I'm not sure if I can afford a wideband. The tuning guide talks about using wideband sensors but I don't recall it saying anything about how to hook one up. Do you just disconnect the stock one from the bike and use it's connection with the wideband sensor, and the ecm can read what its saying? Seems to me that it would be talking a different language than the narrow band sensor. Thx again for any help guys.

Basically yes. Just make sure to save your stock maps and eeprom in several locations before starting.

I'm supposed to look for any erroneous numbers too right?
Yes you would want to look at the map to make sure there are no drastic changes 10+ in surrounding cells.

What am I looking for that might be a bad number?
There are no bad numbers. You can compare your map to the map in the guide or another persons maps.

Does megalog viewer help you out with both cylinders?
The basic rule of thumb is to analyze the rear map, correct it, copy to front map then add 2 to the front map.

I am not familiar with wideband sensors, but this is what I do know. Most of them have a narrow band output signal to send to the ECM. The 02 sensor uses voltages so no need to worry about languages.

I have a couple guides I can email you if you would like.

I have the most current version of the tuning guide from the ECMSpy site(says 2nd edition on title page). And there is another version that came with the program(says its v1.4) Is there something different than those that you have?

By "add 2" do you mean add 2 to the number in each cell of the front fuel map?

The guides I have I put together with info from several sources, although I did not write any of it myself. I just simplified it to my liking.

By "add 2" do you mean add 2 to the number in each cell of the front fuel map?
Yes. This is easily done. Once you have copied and pasted the map to the front, select the entire map by clicking where is says TPS/RPM then click the up arrow 2 times.

dahuvs@comcast.net for guides. Thx so much for the help! Wanted to save money by slicing up my own pipe, and without doing my own tuning it is possibly going to cost me more in the long run. So it's good to explore this option. I may still take it to a dyno though.
