Just had my recall done. Before i took the trip to the dealer i checked all the fluids, and found the coolant lvl low. Refilled it. mentioned it to the dealer while i was there. He found no leaks. I had washed the bike before, and that may have been a bad idea... So after getting home i did a once over before putting it up, and i think i found a leak. There is a small amount of coolant dripping out of the water pump weep hole. Is this normal, or something i need to get the dealer to try to fix? |

My '08 was weeping from that hole too. I told my dealer that there's an upgraded kit to fix the problem, rather than just replace the original type seals. The kit is very expensive GBP500 and was fitted in the last week of the 2 year warranty |

Mine was leaking, just a small amount wouldn't leave any behind just a dried up trail down the side of the case. I would find it the next time I wanted to go for a ride. Never could catch it actually leaking. It finally quit on it's own, it did this for about the first 1000 miles. No I'm not low or out of coolant. |

where is the weep hole at? Mine was low on coolant when i got it, but added some coolant and its held so far. I am wondering if my dealer was lazy or if it leaked. |

It's on the right side as sitting in the seat. behind the exhaust pipes where the coolant hoses attach to the water pump(hump on the side of the engine) the weep hole is opposite the hoses where they attach(toward the back side) it is small and hidden behind an exhaust pipe. |

Yep it's a bad seal ok. The 2010 models had a redesign to get rid of this problem. In the UK, the witness drilling is known as the wetness drilling. The motor has to be rotated to do this, so get the dealer to fit the upgrade kit to stop it leaking again. |

I had a similar situation on the electrical recall and I identified evidence of a water pump leak to the dealer. They replaced the whole unit and mentioned they have seen this before, which indicated mine wasn't a rare case. They had the bike for 8 days. |

Does anybody have any pics of the location? I just brought my bike in for service today and they said I was also low on coolant and that there was a leak somewhere, which they couldn't locate. If I could send them pics of the location as well as tell them about the upgrade kit, then that would greatly save me some time in the shop.... |

The weep hole is on the right hand side of the bike near where the 2 coolant hoses enter the water pump. If its leaking there, you should see white powder like stuff from the evaporating coolant. (Message edited by gbaz on May 14, 2010) |

Pic from something else but the RED arrow points to the general location of the weep hole. Ignore the BLUE arrow

I'm still hopeful mine will sort itself out. All these bikes have the same seal and I assume some people have many miles on that seal. If it starts gushing out, then i'll worry, but mine doesn't even weep every time I ride. |

Avalaugh, when was your bike registered ? It may be worth talking to your dealer as it's a known issue ... |

Parts list breakdown, tools first. Some of the tools are specific to installing the bearing or seal, so unless you've got them, doing it at home would be tougher to do. B-49141-2 water pump oil seal installer B-49141-3 water pump water seal installer B-49141-4 water pump seal installer base tool B-49196 water pump needle bearing installer gasket (water pump housing) impeller rotary (water) seal oil seal needle bushing (bearing) thrust washer shaft assembly gasket (clutch cover to crankcase) |

I just picked up my bike from the dealer yesterday after having the water pump leak fixed. It had 911 miles on it. They also did the wiring harness. Now all I need to do is bring it back when they get the back ordered clutch cover in around June 8. |

Mine leaks a little coolant on really hot days (85ºF+) from the overflow tube that comes straight down on the front-right of the engine, right past the weep hole in the above picture. Is that what we're talking about? |

Jeepinbueller -- No, it's the little weep hole in the side of the engine case that's leaking. It only happens when the seal wears out or tears. Getting hot wouldn't do anything to the pump or seal itself, thats what the hose is for that you see dripping. |

Dealer is ordering the parts for the seal now. The servace manager is going to change the pluges for me while he's there, and check the valves. If I get him the stick on insulation they will apply it to the frame for me when the engine is rotated. For the extra work he thinks they will need to charge me for an hour or two. So now I need to find some really good insulation and see if that will stop the fuel from boiling. |

I did my frame the hard way. Little strips and a lot of time. It doesn't stop the boiling after shutdown but I believe it does reduce the frame temp while riding. |
