Hey guys I would like to know how many HP a stock S1 makes? I have the chance to put the heads, cams, intake and carb on my S2. I can get the parts for cheap.

Is it worth the work to change everything out?

The S2 has a stock sportster motor, while the S1, depending on the year could have the same engine, or a thunderstorm...

If it's a '96-'98 S1 (not '98 S1W/S3T), the heads, pistons and cams are different, but not much better. +1 point compression and D cams is it.

Don't the Buells have lighter crank flywheels compared to equivalent year stock Sportster motors?

Only the '98 S1W/S3T and '99-up Buells.

From the (double-posted) thread in the S2 forum:

S2: sportster engine. 76hp, 78lb-ft.
S1: Lightning engine - different heads/cams, compression bump. 91hp, 85 lb-ft.
S1W: first of the Thunderstorm engines - later added to S3, X1 (with EFI), and M2 (with lower RPM cams). 101hp, 90 lb-ft (exc. M2 because of the cam difference, 91/85 rating).

An S1 engine is a "half-step" above the S2 motor. An S1W Thunderstorm motor works veryvery well in an S2. I have T-storm heads, pistons, and X1 cams in my S2 with the stock heavy-flywheel bottom end and a Buell race ignition and Buell race muffler. LOVE IT.

That's at the crank, not the wheel. All those #s are at the crank.

Regardless. A 2004+ sportster with the XB heads is only making 70hp at the crank. A Sportster Sport was only rated at 61hp and that was with the upgraded heads and cams.

As I pointed out earlier, the engine "Sport" in XL1200S was somewhat of a joke, save the cool ignition. However, 61 HP would've been at the wheel. My '03 XL1200S made 70 RWHP 78 TQ after stage I and dyno tuning @ NRHS. It made 63 RWHP without the tuning or A/C.

Also, the Sportster engine in a Buell will make more power @ the crank anyway because of the factory free-er flowing A/C and 2-1 exhaust

The latter 1200 Sportsters are putting 70 HP at the rear wheel. There's no way they could get 25 HP with stage I, and I've seen 85 RWHP stage I '04-up 1200s on XLF.

Those are all crank numbers. They don't list wheel numbers. I had an '04 1200. With a stage 1 I was getting about 76rwhp on a dyno that I think reads a little high, so your 70 figure is not out of line. 85rwhp on a stage 1 is a REALLY high Dyno. That's XB12 territory.

However, you are correct about the intake and exhaust differences and, knowing how much of an impact they make on these engines from a stock Sportster, I would agree that those two things could make the difference in power alone.

What kind of numbers should one expect from an X1 with a V&H and Forcewinder? Just curious.

I'd say between 79-85 RWHP, depending on tune.

Kalali, before rebuilt my engine I put my X1 on a Dyno and my set up was pretty close to yours (Hurricane Flow Air Cleaner/Ham can, stock exhaust header with a Vance and Hines muffler), although my engine at that time had about 40K, ok it made 79 RWHP and 81 Tq.

The next week I going back to put my X1 on a Dyno just to see the new numbers after 5k on it since I rebuilt the engine with a 1250 kit and Porting Heads Stage 1 from NRHS and with the D&D Full Exhaust System.

First time since rebuilt the engine, the best runs pulled 98.6 HP and 114.3 Nm at the rear wheel. Torque peaked at 4300 rpm and HP peaked at 6900 rpm.

I think everything is starting to settle. The fuel mileage went up, the throttle response went up, the smoothness went up, yadda yadda......everything appears to be okay.
Noticeable power and torque increase, much faster now..
My engine is loving this setup.

Let's see how it goes now..............
I'll provide findings.

Regards Buellers

Great thanks.
Jose', big jump in HP but not as much in TQ. Wonder why that is? Quite impressive numbers though. Must be a kick in the pants to get on the throttle on that thing...

My s1 went from the 91 at the crank to 104 at the wheel. Talk about a rude awakening......
