Three years after my M2 and I lost our tragic battle with gravity, I finally found the right tuber in the right place at the right time for the right price.
It's a 98 S1 with an NHRS 1250 kit, Mikuni carb, Vance & Hines pipe, and a bunch of other odds and ends.
I expected the front brake to be weaker than my XB, but the back brake kind of surprises me. Is it normal that it doesn't have enough force to lock up?
Had to stand on mine to get it to lock when I got it. Braided line helped feel a lot and gave a very slight improvement in power. New non-stock pads, bleed and/or a rebuild should also help.
Nallac, you are probably the only person who "complains" about the rear brake being too touchy...There must be something wrong with it!! Mine improved greatly after putting in Ferodo sintered pads and is strong enough to keep me out of trouble.
I found yesterday that my rear brake won't even keep the bike from rolling backwards on a hill at a traffic light. On my other bikes, I just rest my foot on the lever at that particular light. On the S1, it vibrates inexorably backwards.
I'll have to check it against my Uly when I get home. I'm pretty sure the rear brake mounts haven't changed in the past decade. If rebuilding this one doesn't firm it up, I can always put on a newer one.
Oh, and check out what I discovered yesterday. Funny, that doesn't look like the stock cam position sensor ...

The bike was pinging, and the previous owner mentioned he'd adjusted the timing, so I pulled the cover off last night. Turns out the TwinTec was set on the most aggressive race curve. I put it back on a less aggressive street curve, and I didn't hear any pinging this morning. Sweet.
Now I just need to sort out the carb. The idle's a bit inconsistent, and it sputters some times at low speeds. It's disconcerting in mid u-turn. I'm hoping I can dial it out with the air screw, but I have a sneaking suspicion the pilot jet needs to come out for cleaning.
Nallac, you are probably the only person who "complains" about the rear brake being too touchy...There must be something wrong with it!! yes i gathered that from what i've read on here...its easy to lock it up. i do prob 60% of my braking with the rear only as its that good. oh and the front was crap until i changed pads last weekend.
