RT, are those modified stock sideplates or RS sideplates? Looks real good... |

Thanks, they were on the bike when I bought it. They look like unmodified factory pieces to me, but when I sent the numbers cast into the back of them to Court, he told me they're modified stockers. You can check'em out for yourself in a couple of weeks! rt |

Cool beans. I'm pondering an idea for some bolt-on rearsets for mine; we'll see how it goes. I probably won't get started until after I get back. My shop buddy is swamped with big, slow projects right now and Home Depot work on the weekends. |

Can't wait. Is there beer close by??? I gotta dig out my cooler. When I go TDY to TX I usually drink Shiner Bock... I hope there is some close by. Of course I do not drink much so do not mind me if I am sitting around yelling FREEBIRD. Jay, it is Master Sgt not Sgt but I will forgive you this time. Damn civilians... |

"No way, Brad! Now I'm gonna have to force your share of frozen margaritas on Bartimus! " I am up for the task, anything for Brad! We can do like Spidey did, when he went to europe, and make a cardboard cutout of Brad and sit him by the fire... See you guys soon, WOOHOO! The gathering is ALMOST here! |

There's plenty of Shiner in Texas. I don't drink much beer, but when I do I like Woodchuck or Hornsbys. |

I'm a cheap beer drinker but I do not drink much these days. I do like the Shiner Bock and there was a place in Omaha that has something called Wheat Beer that I liked. Other than that it is Rolling Rock, Pabst, Miller or Bud. I know Jay had the Hard Stuff last year (Special Hillbilly Bueller blend)... I imagine if Jay and Denny are involved it will make its appearance again. It was all fun and games until the cops showed up... LOL |

This is not good. This is the view up through the oil pump hole on my S2 after a 15 mile ride today:
I was going very slowly when I heard a bad noise, kinda like gear teeth stripping. I looked down and my oil pressure light was on. I got it shut down immediately. I hope it's only the oil pump.
Here'a the oil pump driven gear.
These little buggers came out of the oil pump. They look like needle bearings. I'm a little concerned that the oil pump may not be my only problem.
This may impact my choice of vehicles for the Texas S2Step... rt |

The only place that you would have needle bearings that have the thing'ies on the bearing ends would be the cam needle bearings in the right half of the engine case ... The picture of the oil pump looks like a -91 oil pump ... That means it only sucks oil from the flywheel sump area ... My question is who had the cams out and replaced a right hand case cam needle bearing ??? |

RT, I have my stock oil pump from my 2002 M2 with 15,000 miles and the stock drive gear in decent shape if you need a quick fix. Shoot me a PM and we can work out details? I have a pretty good idea if we figure it out tonight FYI. |

Thanks, guys. I bought the motor from another badwebber a few years back, it had quite a bit of hop-up work done before it came to me. The PO told me the heads were done by Nallin, it could be the rest of the work was done there, too, but I don't know for sure. I imagine that's when the needle bearings went in the case. Here's a shot of the bearings in the cam cover:
I ran out of time before I got a close look at all the cam bearings, I'll do that in the morning. My worry is that those needles got loose from somewhere and caused the pump to freeze, rather than the drive gear going out. I need to figure out where they came from before I put it back together. I may be riding an S1 at the Texas S2step, but I'll be there with beer and okra anyway! rt (Message edited by road_thing on May 03, 2010) |

Lafayette--you nailed it. I went back over to the shop and pulled the cams to look at the case bearings and the intake cam bearing on the front cylinder is shredded. I found two of the needles in my oil pump, but the rest are MIA. I assume they're in the crankcase. Looks like the bearing bore is in pretty rough shape, too, along with the bearing surface on that cam. This is gonna be expensive, and I don't see any way in hell it gets resolved before the get-together in Leakey. I'll be the guy on the S1. rt |

Road_thing: This is why H-D when back to bushings in the right half of the engine case ... Needle bearing last in the tappets, but for some engineering reason they do not make 100,000 miles when on the end of the cams ??? "BUT", for RACING anywhere you cam put needle, ball, and roller bearings the engine will sure spin free'er !!! |

Here's where my trouble started:
Two of the missing needles are on that blue shop towel in the picture I posted last night. The rest are...somewhere else. rt |

Where the hell did they go? Could they be in the oil line or oil bag? |

Lafayette says the oil pump drains the flywheel sump in the crankcase; I figure the needles fell in there, and the two that I found in the oil pump came from there. Given the size of the needles and the close fit of the rotors in the oil pump I think the rest of the needles are still in the crankcase. Of course, I haven't looked in the oil filter yet. rt |

Damn rt, Is there a way to get them out without splitting the cases? I wonder if one of those magnets and a flexible shaft would work? |

Splitting the cases isn't hard as long as you don't have to pull the crank out totally. Pulling the crank and or replacing the crank bearings isn't so easy. Pulling the whole motor kind of sucks though... |
