I know they are cheap to replace but wondering if its possible to open it up and clean the contacts inside, etc. The contacts are getting a bit flaky but still works. Raining outside and nothing better to do... Thanks. |

nope. Sealed housing. Most likely it is fried in there anyway- not dirty. I tore mine open after I replaced it and the problem was burnt contacts and metal worn away completely...no way to clean that! |

"i" squirt silicon spray into key slot every 5K miles ... DO NOT PUT ANY OTHER KEYS(for that matter any thing else) WITH YOU IGNITION KEY AS THE EXTRA WEIGHT WILL DESTROY THE IGNITION SWITCH !!! Have 108,898.2 miles on "original" OEM Ignition switch as of the last ride ... KEEP HARLEY-DAVIDSON technicians away from your ignition switch as they will break it !!! |

Yup just the barrel key...And do the silicon squirt on all the key holes, cars and bike alike. Helps particularly with the underseat lock. |

I tore my key cylinder open a month or so ago. It was N-A-S-T-Y in there. What is it about the key cylinder that gets the wires so hot? I wired in a cheap rocker switch I had laying around that comes with a fog light kit. I wired it up just to turn the bike over and expected it to basically get hot enough to melt but just the opposite happened. It stayed cool to the touch so now I'm using that as a band-aid until I decide on what I want to use as a key switch. Works anyway. |
