1999 Buell X1 Lightning, 14K miles. Well maintained. At startup, I get a flickering oil light that tends to go away as soon as the throttle is opened. Lately, I have noticed the oil light coming on as the engine gets up to temp. However it is so random / intermittent I'm not finding a reasonable explanation for this since it occurs / doesn't occur at any particular rpm, speed load, lean angle etc. I don't wheelie the bike, so thats out. I plan on replacing the oil switch, filter and fluid with all new correct components as to eliminate them as a cause on Thursday. Any thing else I should look for? Thanks, Jason... | ||

Sorry if this may sound like a dumb question but have you checked your oil level properly? Seems like checking the oil level in Buells deserves a whole new chapter in the OM based on the number of different ways everyone describes the "correct" method!!... | ||

Found it. (K.- the oil level just touches the lower hash mark on the stick at NOT). The wires from the oil pressure switch were gnawed nearly in half where the bundle goes under the lower fairing. It looks like it's in such a place that the damage could only have been caused by a chunk of road debris hitting the bottom of the case. It's also in the same area where the previous owner had remedied a broken lower fairing mount with a zip tie. So with the help of 4 MGD's and a flashlight I found what seems to be the source of my troubles.  |
