Help!! I just picked up a '99 X1 with 8900 miles a few weeks ago. The bike starts hard and needs a little throttle to turn it over. The idle is very rough and will stall out when cold. After riding it over 15-20 minutes, it will still idle rough and stall. I have changed the spark plugs and added some octane boost/FI cleaner to the gas with no joy. The bike runs like a champ over 2000 RPMs and is very strong at the upper RPM registers. Where should I start?? Thanks!! Lee |

I would start with a TPS reset and go from there. |

Being its 11 years old and with the symptoms you describe I'd bet the intake manifold seals are toast. |

get ecm spy and do a good TPS reset. I had similiar problems on my 99 S3 and that cleared it right up. |

Manifold seals are perfect... Since I don't have ECMSpy, I took the X1 to the stealership for the TPS reset. Low and behold, on my way there, I lost the compensator nut in my primary. No internal primary damage, just one pissed off owner... Now I am awaiting parts before I can put the beast back together and ride... |

OK... The bike is repaired, TPS reset done. It idles OK (but not great) now, but I have a "miss" around 3000 rpm. I have a Dobeck TFI unit ready for me to install. Will this help out with the "miss" I'm experiencing or am I stuck with another trip to the stealership? Lee |

Dobeck TFI's and the BUELL DDFI mix like oil and water. The miss? plugs plug wires intake seals injectors In proper tune with the idle set at 1050 or a touch higher it should purr like a kitten.........er or tiger. Lost the Stator nut makes me wonder what else the PO has messed with. |

Plugs are new, plug wires look good upon inspection, intake seals have been checked with no leaks. The injectors should be fine... different behaviors are being exhibited now, so I don't think the injectors are the culprit. The throttle position cable recall was done during this trip to the dealership, but I just confirmed over the phone that no TPS reset was completed, even though I had specifically requested that be done. Any ideas?? Lee |

Find another dealer and get the TPS reset done. |

I wish I knew someone here in NM with ECMSpy... I posted another thread in the Old School Buells section requesting help from anyone in NM with the software to do a TPS reset. I don't have much faith in the local dealership's service techs with the exception of the service manager who owns an X1. I've spoken with him about this and will be seeing him tomorrow morning to further discuss this issue. Damn, can't anything be easy?? |

Space Systems Engineering and Operations? Used Laptop $100 ECM cable $40 EcmSpy Free Tutorial via phone with another BadWeber experienced with EcmSpy. That's what I did, with the end result priceless IMO. Wish that I had done it 3 years earlier. |

I just ordered ECMSpy and a cable from EBay... After installing my new engine temperature sensor later this week, I'll give the ECMSpy software a chance... Lee |

"... it should purr like a kitten....." James, if your X1 purrs like a kitten then there is something seriously wrong with it. I suggest you get rid of it immediately. Drop me a PM and I might be able to take it off your hands... |

The engine temp sensor was the culprit... The TPS was reset as well and now the bike is running like a champ!!! As soon as my ECMSpy software and cable arrives, it'll be time to balance out the air/fuel mixture... |

Howdy, Newb here but not new to bikes or HD. I am an indy shop owner located in Dexter, NM, about 15 miles South of Roswell, NM. I presently only have one Buell customer and he is having some major issues with this bike. It say for some time as the PO didn't like it then sold it to the present owner. I serviced the bike earlier this year and installed a new ignition switch as the old one fried. Dealer only item a bugger to locate. The only performance upgrade to the bike is a D&D Slip on muffler. The bike ran strong after new plugs, wires, and full service. He called me up a few days after to tell me the bike was running crappy again. I got it back and can't recall what I found but something rather minor and bike ran good until the other day. He and his OL went for a good long ride and it ran perfect then he went to start it the other day and it's one lunging and just generally sounds like garbage. I see a lot of talk on here about the ECM Spy software as well as the data cable that you can purchase on E-bay which I just did. I see that lots of you have mentioned to do a reset on the TPS and that makes great sense. What I don't know is what is the amount of fuel pressure this bike should put to the injectors? I do not have an SM for this bike but am looking for one. Is there a download available for this bike, 99 X1 Lightning, here on the site or anyone who would like to sell one? Thanks and I look forward to learning lots more from you guys. I work primarily on Harleys and as I mentioned only have the one Buell customer. Oh yeah, something else I noticed that was a little off was when I turned the key on today the fuel pump made a horrendous noise like I have never heard from this bike before so it may be as simple as the fuel pump is on it's way out? Thanks again. I go by Spidey so if anyone wants to call me Spidey or anything else but late for supper that's fine. |

Welcome to the asylum, as far as tuber FI pressure it should be 46-53 psi at the Schrader valve. Some pumps make different noises than others but if it just changed tone it may be getting ready to shoot craps...my X1 humms but my S3 makes a groaning squall sound and seems to work fine. EcmSpy is a great tuning/diagnostic tool. I'd also check ALL the ground terminals they are notorious for causing weird problems. New manuals are kinda pricey,I got mine from American Sport Bike .... great people to deal with. |

Hey Spidey, hoy ya doing? Nice to meet all you guys. So are you the Spidey of this board? Like I say, call me anything but late for supper. LOL I'm easy. So as far as the ECM Spy can I download it off the web? Looks like it's secured or something. You'll have to forgive me as I am a bit computer challenged. I can run the heck out of tuning software but have heck with the web. LOL I'm ordering the cable tomorrow. Easier than trying to build one as I know I'd screw that up. Is the injection on the 99 X1's a Delphi system? I work on the Delphi's on the 03 up Twin Cams and the Magnetti Marelli on the early TC's and Evos but this seems to be a bit of a different animal. I guess learning the ES software is the most important thing. So if I understand this correctly you can not only reset the TPS but also add or correct MAPS? Can't wait to get into it. I am sure I'll be screaming for help here soon so thanks for your help and patience. Jim, How's that Spidey? |

The Buell uses Dynamic Digital Fuel Injection (DDFI). Independently mapped spark and fuel control . Temp compensated fuel delivery . Single fire spark. Open/Closed loop air/fuel control. Plus it has the ability to learn and change according to temps, engine and air, altitude and changes to the air breather and exhaust system. |

I thought I read my '00 X1 had dual-fire spark,; independent spark front and rear. |

That's a common misconception. Dual fire means that two spark plugs fire with one signal; conversely, what Jramsey said. |

Hey guys, I got on Fleabay and picked up the data cable and was also sent a copy of ECMSPY. Got the program loaded but now I can't get the computer to talk to the ECM or visa versa. It tells me communication problem. If I leave the key on so it can talk to the puter and then go to device manager and USB ports it makes my computer go crazy. I was thinking I am connected to the wrong data port on the bike as usually that cable is found somewhere near the ECM/U but the only one I have been able to locate is sticking out just under the ignition in the front of the bike by the neck. There is all kinds of talk about downloading drivers and installing then etc. I believe I have done that correctly but apperantely not. Can anyone help me out with this mess. I'd really like to get this bike back to the owner and in good running condition. HELP!!! I'm desperate from one of the pros here. THanks in advance and with respect to Spiderman I shall now just sign off as Jim. Thanks guy. |

Ok, I have tried everyone on the WWW and no one even has the PC 803-211 which is the Power Commander II so my next option is to convert this thing over to a carb. Anyone done that and what all did you have to do? I realize it will not be cheap and will require a new main harness, carb, ECU etc. Just wondering if any of you have a good source for any of the above stuff. The carb isn't a problem. Holding a well modified CV in my hand as we speak that will work just fine and just need to get the right manifold which I suspect would be a Sporty manifold. Any ideas on a carb ECU/ignition module for this beast? THanks again. Jim. |

Dang, so doesn't anyone ever read this board? Anyway, I got the computer to talk to the ECM with ECMSPY. I saved all the stuff I am supposed to save and then reset the TPS as per the instructions. First to 0.0 then keep backing it off just a titch. Then I did the reset TPS with the function button and saved it. I then opened up butterfly to the next setting of the 4.6 or 5.1% depending on which window you are looking at. The bike wouldn't even start. I then set it back to 0.0 and did reset and started the bike. It would start right up but stumbled all the heck and horrible throttle response. I am pretty sure that either someone has been into the ECM and made some changes or something. Anyone have a set of factory EEPOROM and MAP settings they would be willing to send me? Sure would appreciate any and all help. Thanks in advance, Jim. |

Morning James, Man I am sorry for missing our Sunday phone and tune appt. I didn't have a good Sunday. First I lost my phone or thought I did at least. I had taken it out of it's holster at my bro's house as we were working on his DIL's car and I didn't want to smash it. Got home in time for our call and the freaking power was off. My roommate never even called me to tell me that so I get home and no phone and no power. Now I'm freaking out. Where's my Droid? LOL My bro brought it out to me yesterday and of course the battery is dead to the world and won't take a charge. Grrrr, it only gets better. Being a Droid and new to the market no one has a battery for it. I had to run 200 miles round trip yesterday to get a new battery from my phone guy. Dang rural living, has it's pro's and con's. LOL Anyway the owner decided to go online and ordered a new ECM. Oh well, I guess I'll pop it on, reset the TPS and give it another shot and see what happens. Please wish me luck, I think I'll need it. I have read a lot on here about the engine temp sensor causing havoc and this bike being almost 12 years old I recommended to him that we change that as well just to be on the safe side. He agreed and we have one on it's way as well. I'll give you a shout when I get the new ECM in and let you know the prognosis. Thank you so much for your help to date and looking forward to talking with you again. Have a great day, Jim. |
