Hey I have a 99' x1 and it has always started pretty easy for me.I have never had to twist the throttle to keep it running after it starts, but now i do...at least till it warms up. Any ideas what i got goin on? If I let go of the throttle during the initial start up rpm's drop and it dies.

Mine started doing that after I changed over to Race maps. If you have not changed anything recently it could be change in the ambient temp. It t bothers you too much you can experiment with the cold start enrichment values and see if that helps.

Go to the "Other Maps" page and on the top left hand you'll see the table. You can also try adding more fuel in the idle area and see if that helps. Just make small incremental changes and keep a note and make sure you save your current settings in case you need to restore. After spending a great deal of time I managed to make it a little better but I still have to keep the throttle open by hand for a few seconds otherwise it will stall. You may have better luck. Keep us posted.

I'm running the same modded maps of Kalali's, I haven't had to keep the throttle open to stop from stalling?...
altho it nearly does.

Thejuicer, have you checked/done all the usual things like TPS reset, checked idle speed is set right, intake seals, exhaust leaks?.

Ambient temperature fluctuations? Probably.
You may also consider raising your idle speed a little bit if you're borderline. I tend to keep my idle speed on the low side (when the bike is fully warmed up) and that's probably why Callan is having less of an issue.

Apparent ambient temperature fluctuations, more likely. The head temperature sensor is notorious for failing intermittently. Anything that comes and goes mysteriously is electrical. My '99 S3T has had many electrical issues. Replacing the heat sensor straightened my idle out; the higher rpm irregularities turned out to be the ECM itself. Your intake seals could be dry or cracked. Has anything hit your air cleaner?

My 99 X1 has similar symptoms however the ecm is stock. I have ecmspy, and I was thinking it could be the AFV needing to be set different for the cold start. Also, during the cold start, if I rock the throttle to much it will gasp and die. Any thoughts?

I would raise the idle adjustment stop to provide +/- 1050 rpm idle at cold start. The only issue is the idle may be higher when your fully warm. I keep the adjuster where I can reach it on the bike and adjust as necessary.

The AFV is not a function of temperature so you can only either reset it to 100 or fix it to a specific value by making the max and min the same. Either way it has nothing to do with he cold start condition.
Strangely enough the cold start enrichment table is supposed to address this idle issue but it takes a lot of experimentation to get it dialed in.
