Just seeing if I'm alone here on this subject. I have a S3 that I made into a streetfighter with an XL6 and a thunderheader welded to the stock header. Extremely loud. Whenever I ride this bike I feel like being an a-hole. I don't do anything dangerous, but it makes my day if I scare children on my way to work. It seems like Buells were made to disturb the peace.... |

You aré an A-hole, lol. So am I. I have a Force exhaust on my S2 (basically the same thing- a step-tuned header with a reverse cone megaphone for a "muffler"). I turn heads everywhere I go. |

No, sorry if its loud enough to scare people, you're just an a-hole. Might even be a certified a-hole, not just an occasional a-hole. That's one of the reasons why Myrtle Beach and the entire state of AZ are now very difficult to ride a bike in. Lighten up on all of us and get a decent exhaust system that makes power, with out scaring children. Please. |

It is possible to have a loud pipe on your bike and be responsible about it. Maybe I missed something, but what's difficult about riding in Arizona? |

It's much more fun to let kids grab your header pipes after you've just finished a long ride. Then you don't disturb old folk. |

Loud pipes arnt really the issue, i have a loud full system on my bike, but its very reasonable at idle and under 3k rpm. Hence why in a congested area or in neighborhoods i dont get on the throttle. Its the assholes who abuse loud pipes that make everyone look bad. |

I like the sound, but as Matt said, unless I romp on it, you can't really hear it too bad. I don't need to ride to get attention. Between the BA bike, red hair, Mohawk, and Spanish tongue, it seems to follow me wherever I go. |

I like the sound of a healthy engine building revs and putting power to pavement. We Motorcyclist can be our own worst enemy, there are not enough of us to vote our way out of a mess, and the homeowner/Volvo driving carpool Moms have more time and influence than is imaginable. As a Lifetime spent in Law Enforcement, never once has a motorist told me "Officer, I just didn't hear the motorcycle" Loud Pipes sound good to Bikers, not motorists. I hear tell of Freedom loving Texans putting in a sound ordinance in the Hill Country due to the loud pipes, now that should tell you how bad it is getting. If your loud, idle by and don't crack the throttle until you are out and away. |

I have a horn that doesn't depend on engine rpm. Sounds like a car, so it gets more attention when it folks hear it, VS the constant drone of someone's pipes. |

You keep going for your horn everytime someone tries to switch lanes into you and I will ride comfortable knowing that the person next to me knows I'm there. |

At highway speeds, when you consider that your pipes point rearward not forward, and most cars have excellent sound insulation and 1000watt stereos, the pipe thing is stupid. If we don't govern ourselves, someone else will do it for us. I guarantee that person will have no love of a V-twin on over run. If you must "Be Loud to Live" go ahead as long as you can before the Sound Police come at you with a decibel meter at every turn. If I have learned anything, it's that a true believer cannot be swayed. |

So I guess everyone on this forum has stock exhaust? They only make a couple of exhaust systems for these bikes so if you find them to loud the age old saying goes " if it's to loud then your to old". By the looks of the profiles of the anti-sound bike guys that statement holds true. Keep rolling with your saddle bags and trailer hitches and i'll keep being the young punk that you shake a stick at. |

I hate to interrupt the pissing and moaning about loud pipes, but WRT the OP.. Ever since seeing the first Transformers movie I've thought that the Yamaha R1 could be a Decepticon in disguise. (Everyone knows Autobots are American vehicles!) Buells are too curvy, not enough sharp edges to really strike me as the transforming type. Yes, I've put way too much thought into this.

Thank you Scm2 for prompting me to back up a step and clarify. Stock pipes and cans are designed to get through tight emissions and meet a manufacturing price point. I myself do not have stock pipes or can, I run the Buell race header and race can with race ECU. My point is that as your decibel level rises, so does your sense of common courtesy and civic responsibility. You need to minimize needless idling and throttle monkey shines in built up areas, ride in the lowest RPMs as is reasonable until you get to where you can crank on it. What pisses people off, and makes them want to sign noise regulation petitions is the suburban drag race from your driveway to the stop sign, and then to the next stop sign. Also in congested downtown areas when we try to set of the car alarms, while fun to do, it only cements the image of "Disturbing the Peace" to the Moms and Secretaries. Pick your battles, trying to convince a city council member that you need open megaphones is a non-starter. We are also lumped in with the Busa crowd (Howling 4 into 1 open megaphone, eardrum splitting stupidity). For everybody who lives in a rural setting,or Industrial Park, please disregard and do as you please. Anti-Motorcycle, Backlash Legislation is coming unless we look to govern ourselves. Look at the Anti Wheelie Law (Reckless Operation) in Florida if you think it's not around the corner your mistaken. |

Thank You "Sanders" for a most entertaining thread. Scm2, no hard feelings, I get where your coming from. After reading your profile, I would hardly refer to you as a Young Punk, you appear to be very established. I look forward to another session. |

And neither will that teenage girl on the cell phone about to turn in front of you, but the cops have some sorta special glasses and can find you in a crowd. At least they always find me , no matter how quite I try to be with a Force exhaust. |
