1998 S-1 White Lightning, but thinking it's probably the same as the other S-1's. Like to get a correct sized socket for it. Anyone know the size and is it metric?

36 MM, Rear axle nut TORQUE is 68-73ft.lbs. ...

It is very important that not to over tighten the axle nut as it crushes the soft spacer between the wheel bearings which causes wheel bearing failure ...

Do not over tighten the front axle nut as you will get wheel bearing failure there also ...

I kind of like the XB method of axle tightening: tighten it, then loosen, then re-tighten. It gives you the feeling that you are really seating it right.

Good info on not tightening too tight.
Why would the front axle also be susceptible to over tightening? This is my first American bike so I'm learning alot.

How about torque for front axle nut?

Front axle nut 48-53Ft.lbs. ...

You should buy a FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and a PARTS BOOK for your YEAR/MODEL BUELL while you can still get them ...

If you have a shop in your area which services old air cooled VWs, they will have the socket. It's the same size as a front axle nut on a bug or old bus.
