Need some advice BBS. I have a transmisson leak that seems to start under the starter. I cleaned and silconed the spedo plug to eliminate that possibility. Next I replaced the starter gasket twice, once dry once with dressing. I am begining to think the leak is from between engine cases. I forgot to mention leak only occurs after highway speed riding. Does this problem sound familar to anybody? |

Not to me. Sorry. I'm sure someone will jump in to help though. Is tranny lube level possibly too high? |

The startor plug has a tendancy to leak on occasion. Follow your Shop man for removing. (too much to type sorry) After removing the plug put a nice layer of RTV on it to seal it up and BLAMO no more leaks. That is if it is the problem It could be a base gasket also. |

Wayne.. The offending oil appears to come from behind the rear cylinder, top of case, under the starter, right? Does it accumulate on the drain plug before dripping to the ground (or on your back wheel when you're riding?)? I've had the same leak for some time now. It took forever to find. At first I thought it was a leaking drain plug... then, a leaking primary gasket. If your leak is the same, it's the grommet where the stator wire comes through the case. All the silicone in the world won't help it from the outside. You need to install a new grommet. I haven't fixed mine yet. My leak looks bad... but it's really very little oil coming out (primary). If I check the level in the primary, I can't even detect it's down at all. Here's the *temporary* fix (please note I said "temporary"!): I've fitted a "Tampax" of sorts (flame on!!) that'll work great until I have a need to replace the clutch, etc. at some future date. Just wad something up (like a paper towel) and jam it under the lines that are right there. It will stay in place perfectly, won't be noticable, and will catch every drop that starts to make it's way back. Just change it every now and then when it becomes too saturated. No more leak (at least visible to passerby!)and no more dirty rear wheel. It catches every drop. Steve |

Steve You cannot replace the grommet on the stator wire unless you replace the stator. You will have to remove the plug put silicone on the groved part put the plug back in and your set. |

Spidey... Yes... you're right. I checked into that a while ago and forgot (I've had the leak for a long time!!!!) Knock on wood... my stator is good. Yes... when I have it apart, I'll certainly try sealing it properly from the inside. Thanx! |

Steve, you described exactly what is happening, but as Spiderman suggested I siliconed the stator plug.(I called it a spedo last night, just a little drain bramage.) I must have been to stingy with silicone. |

Wayne.... let me know how your fix works. Did you have to do it from inside the primary case, or were you able to pull the grommet from the outside? If that's the case, I'll lose the Tampax and fix it tomorrow! I was under the impression that I had to pull the primary cover and some other parts (like clutch) to be able to access the grommet to work on. Steve |

About 25mi or so after silicon in grommet, evertthing seems OK. If it leaks again I might try the tampax method, or find 1/4 20 with wing-nut heads on them. |

Tranmisson leak has been fixed, it was a unlikely problem. Piece of crap Spyke starter was the poblem. This will be the third time back to the factory for it. The first two time it grounded out internaly, burning up without the key in the ignition. This time the seal behind the bendix gear is bad, lube gets into housing then would leak out of the bottom of the starter making me suspect stator plug or the cases themselves. I don't know if anyone else has had problems with Spyke products, I sure have. |
