I did my first track day on my 1125R with NESBA at BeaveRun on Sunday. After many weeks of way above average weather, this weekend was winter all over again in southwestern PA with a high temp of 40 on Sunday........ I'd only done two short street rides of about an hour each with my FMF carbon slip-on. I made it into the 5'th session Sunday when it just exploded, cracked from end to end. So, it surely wasn't a result of failure to re-pack in a timely fashion. I will call them today, and I expect they will be getting a bunch more calls in the near future. Obligatory pic:

The pressure of the exhaust gases exiting the pipe is amazing. |

Great. Just did my first trackday with my FMF-ed 1125 yesterday. Makes me feel good to have to worry about something else now. |

When FMF had their pipes on sale I was going to buy one. I could have got one for $341 Canadian + shipping(I live in Canada.) I think for $100 less than ordering it from the states but they didn't have any in stock nor were they going to get any more. They told me because Buell was no more that FMF wasn't producing them any more. I ordered a Keda-Design RT3 instead. It cleared customs today and should be here either tomorrow or thursday. Now after hearing about the FMF pipes cracking I'm sure glad I went with the RT3. Way better sound and look too. Thank you Dean! (Message edited by buell77 on April 20, 2010) |

i've never been a fan of carbon pipes the epoxy will only handle so much heat and with the short headers we have the can is taking a lot more than folks think it is unlike the imports that have a mile of pipe to help cool the exhaust before it gets to the can |

Wow, I'm really glad I didn't opt for one of those this riding season. |

My strong suspicious is the street riders here that bought FMF pipes are going to mostly be just fine. Remember, the racers are spending 20-30% of their time at WOT or rolling to it. On the street, you rarely if ever use more than about 25%, except in short bursts. Completely different application. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say every track mile is roughly 6 street miles in terms of wear and service requirements. |

People have to get over the carbon fiber fad. Metallic structures have MUCH BETTER utility. If that last 12 ounces are worth doubling the price as compared to stainless then go for it - but carbon fiber is just not as robust or rugged. ALSO - any shape other than round/cylindrical - is just going to be much more vulnerable to fatigue-related damage since you're dealing with the exhaust pulses that will constantly beat it. (just my opinion - but until I saw the pic above, I didn't realize how FLAT it was) |

I'm with Slaughter, carbon is just not a good choice for a bike with large cylinder volume. I had failures on my old TL1000 with both Yoshimura and M4 exhausts. I had an old Micron carbon cannister that I grafted onto my Husky SM610 and it cracked, as well. It also seems that there are two potential failure modes: * Excessive heat when the packing degrades * Massive exhaust pulses causing a rupture as in this case. The flat sides are likely a factor with this type of failure. So why did I buy it ? I fell victim to the price and the "aerospace quality" advertisement. Anyway, they say they will warranty it and I've asked that they subsitute a Ti can, if possible. |

Ys, FMF also warranted my exhaust. They were fair and honest about it, really, so I can hardly complain. |

Jim, Did they replace it entirely, or do I recall that they sent you pieces and you fixed it ? Time is an issue, and I may ask if that's possible. |

> Did they replace it entirely, or do I recall that they sent you pieces and you fixed it ? Time is an issue, and I may ask if that's possible. They repaired/rebuilt it. I had to send it in. That's the only rub. I'm still waiting on it, actually, but it is supposed to ship tomorrow. They have been pretty good about keeping in touch and sending updates on the process. The shipping time is the greatest portion of the wait. |

Bumping this to report that FMF called me yesterday. They have rebuilt the pipe using reverse materials; Ti can and carbon end cap. Shipping it back to me second day air so I'll have it in time for Mid-Ohio next Monday. Customer service rep said that the owner and R & D manager are asking that I try to break it and report back Can't ask for more than that ! |
