Why is the recommended gap on the XB's 1.6-3.2 mm, and the Ulysses 3.6-4.6 mm? Same clutch, same lever, right? Why different? Sorry if this has already been covered, but I couldn't find with search. |

What year? On the newer models you stretch the cable to the clip on the handlebars after adjustment, it may have something to do with it. |

Same year, same service manual. 2009. |

The clutch cables are different. The Uly cable is much longer, so it probably has different specs to prevent issues. |

The 2009 Service Manual just shows the two specs, one for XB, and another for Ulysses. However, the 2009 Owner's Manual says On Ulysses models, free play needs to be set with clutch cable removed from the handlebar hook. Apparently, the 2009 Ulysses has a "handlebar hook"? I guess whatever that is changes the spec from the 2008 Ulysses which is the same as the other XB's. |

The handlebar hook is the thing on the bars that keeps the cable pulled back so you can see the instrument cluster. once it has been adjusted...... then you put it in the hook thingy. |

You leave the cable in the hook thingy on the 2008's, right? |

Sure, if you can find it! The OEM version of the Bazootie came starting with the 2009 models. |

Thanks Froggy, I was ready to inform the masses of it's official Badweb nomenclature. Was it Crusty that designed and named the original? Anyway, I don't worry about what the book says about the cable adjuster, I set it so it released where I want it. I two finger my clutch like a dirt bike so I set it with very little play. Some folks like it to let go near the grip especially if they have short fingers. They can set it up loose. Make yourself comfortable and don't worry about a spec. Just leave a little gap so you know your alright. |

hmmm. I have an 08 12X, and I have the Handle Bar Hook. However, It does not look like any of the ones in the examples provided. I also purchased my bike new from a dealer with about 8 miles on it. (Message edited by druelly on April 20, 2010) |

Use one or two nickles. My service spec tool for adjusting clutch cable free play has been a nickle for... forever. Doesn't fit : too tight, massive gap : too loose, fits nicely : just right. Never had any issues, believe one measures 1.8mm or so, two giving you 3.6mm , right in spec. I would never get a caliper or ruler to do something so simple. |

The X spec is larger because of it's longer suspension travel in the forks. Remember to lube the cable end in the lever so that it turns rather than bending the cable when actuated. |

This is the Original Bazootie, by Crusty. The precursor to the "cable clamp" on the '09 up Ulys.
An awesome piece of machine work that also works part of the mounting for my heated grip and heated gear switch panel |
