Sigh, fixed my intake leak. Now I have a valve cover leak. Anyone recommend a good valve cover gasket? |

That's what's in there. I pulled the covers because I wanted to double check the tq of my rock box bolts because of a suspected leak from the rear. So, yeah, my fault that the valve cover is leaking. Sigh. Figure I will replace them and retq them down again. |

Is that basically what a top end repair kit does? |

the problem is the sportster design to the top end, there are to many covers or assemblies. From the crank case up most new designs only have 2 assemblies, old jap bikes have 3, sportsters and buells have 4 this where you have the potential for alot of leaks, more gaskets more leaks. If you put a strobe light on a harleys top end and pulse it at the right rate you would see the entire top end move around at different rates. This would happen alot more with the old cast iron cylinders. This is the reason why alot of top end gaskets fail, everything is expanding and contracting at different rates. A rubber or paper gasket can only take so much before it fails and starts to leak. |

Well, like I said. The gaskets are new from the Cometic gasket set I used to redo the base gaskets on my motor. I took the covers off to re torque some bolts on the rocker box and when I reassembled the cover gaskets were kinda warped. I got them to fit in, but for all I know I didn't tighten the bolts well enough or they were just damaged. So I got some new gaskets (OEM) and will redo them. Only thing. I noticed they changed the design of the stock gaskets. Anyone know why? |
