With 2 rides on my bike to date, I already notice that my frame looks kind of, dirty or scuffy, from where my legs were touching the frame. I'm wondering, if I DON'T get some sort of frame pad, will I eventually wear the powdercoating on my frame just through contact/rubbing with my legs (I generally wear jeans when I ride). And if I do decide to get gripsters, are the fusion ones OK, more or less to prevent damage to the frame? I don't know that I prefer the look of the snakeskin ones. It *seems* like they look more obvious on the bike perhaps? Does anyone have the fusion type, with a picture of them on a black frame they could share?? Thanks!! | ||

I've got the Snakeskin type, and love them - they really grip my riding pants nicely, and help insulate me a bit from the rather hot frame. I'm not aware of anyone wearing through the powdercoating, though the bike I know with 60k miles on it does have some sort of clear plastic protector/grips on the frame (not sure what they are). I strongly suspect the powdercoating is stronger than jeans, though. If I understand correctly, the Fusion type is more of a sandpaper - that may have some very nasty effects on jeans or any other type of riding pants. I'm not 100% sure on that, so you'd want to check, but it's something to consider. | ||

Thanks Syonyk. I did read that thread, I read all of them on the TechSpec I do believe... I was more wondering though how the powdercoating will hold up over time if I don't get the pads. I'm not an overly aggressive rider, so I don't need them from a functional grip point of view, really. Though I'm sure I'll notice an improvement when leaning... I don't NEED them for that though. I'm more concerned about the finish of the frame. | ||

Powdercoat is pretty bulletproof. Spritz it with a quick detailer (meguiars, Harley Gloss, S100 engine brite) once in a while and it'll keep it from looking chalky. DO NOT WAX, the texture will make it turn white when the wax dries. | ||

Yeah, thats it, it looks CHALKY just after 2 rides. Odd. Got me to worrying about the powdercoating. I definitely won't wax it, I don't wax anything, just use Plexus on the plastic bits. | ||

I've got the fusion gripsters on my cbr and like them a lot. While they may look like a sandpaper texture in pics, the rubber is soft and grippy and not at all abrasive. I'll be getting the fusion pads for my 1125r as well. | ||

The chalk you see is little bits of jeans (cotton lint) scrubbing off and sticking in the low spots on the textured powdercoat. Think blowing your nose on soft facial tissue if you haven't shaved for a day or two. Detailer with a soft, lint-free cloth should clean any chalk out of there. It's not damage to the powdercoat, it's just part of the fact that it's textured. Some guys have clearcoated over the factory powdercoat, to "smooth" the surface out and make it shiny. |
