Okay, so I got the Crossroads bars. Now I have yet another question... Is there any way to get the stock grip off (clutch side) in one piece? I tried last night, but it seems to be glued onto the stock bars. Any help would be appreciated..

Two ways to - buy new grips (they are cheep - 5 to 10 $) and cut off old, or take a thin long screwdriver, poke under grip spray windex, repeat alot until glue breaks down all around and pull off. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side!

You will never get the stock grip off the clutch side without destroying it. It is heavily glued and will need to be cut off. As already said, just buy some new grips. I highly recommend the Buell Traction grips.

Thanks, EZ... Yup, that's what I figured. Time for new grips! After 2 hrs. trying to get that one off, I gave up. Started peeling it back, using utility knife to scrape the glue off the bar, repeat repeat repeat. Got the grip half off, then gave up and put the stock setup back together. This time, I'll just cut it off and make my life easier.

If the Blast has a hollow bar, it should be easy to pop the grip off using compressed air. I've had some luck on solid bars by poking the nozzle of a blow gun under the grip and shooting air in.

I don't know what kind of bar is on the Blast, and since you've already cut it off, just file this information under "For What It's Worth..."

RT, It would be easy to pop the right grip off if they hadn't used a quart of rubber cement to intstall it.

For replacements, I agree with the compressed air trick.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. From the look of the inside, it looks like the compressed air would just rip it into a LOT of tiny, tiny pieces. Not that I wasn't thinking of doing just that after a while.

Finally! My bars are on, got the traction grips, everything looks great. Took me about an hour last night. The bars really change the bike. I feel like I'm relearning my clutch. LOL.. Also, something that wasn't on the Crossroads site in the description, but the aerodynamics are better. Now the wind (even at 70-75) flows right over the top of my helmet. HUGE improvement. If anyone out there is considering changing the bars, the ones from Crossroads come highly recommended from me! Thanks again, everyone, for all your help.

Scott,

You might need to check your clutch cable to make sure it adjusted right. Anytime you change out your bars its a good thing to do.

Eric,
I think it's okay, the "friction zone" is in the same place (begins about halfway out) as it was before. It's just that the ergo's are pretty different. But, just to be on the safe side, I'll probably give it a check. So, how do I do that? (I'm kinda learning all this as I go...)

Scott,

This is for the S-1, it's the same as a Blast as far as adjusting the clutch. It's a little slow to load. You'll find what you need on page 7. I hope this helps. You'll need a T-27 bit to remove the three torx screws from clutch inspection cover.

Eric,
Cool, thanks again for the heads-up. This gives me something to do this afternoon. I'm gonna bookmark that link, should be a good source of just general info. At least, until I get a service manual for my Blast. (Having to figure out how to reassemble the throttle showed me it would be a good investment. Luckily it was pretty easy, since there's only one way it all fit together. LOL)

All

I'm looking to add about 2 inches to the seat of my wife's Blast, or, perhaps, firm up the foa so she rides a little higher (it's the standard seat, not the Low, and the stock foam compresses the the point that her thigh is darned near horizontal -- she'd like the have at least an inch/inch and a half more altitude between her butt and the ground) . .. anyone know of a place in the Chicago/Milwaukee area that will do it sometime before September (Alligator Bob's business has apparently gotten really good!)

thanks

Hey everyone- I searched the archives looking for some inexpensive handlebars, decided to look at the clubmans from bike bandit and they are not on the site anymore- they just have dirt bars now unless I am looking in the wrong place... I just want some lower bars to replace my stock ape- hangers, I am going to rearsets too when I get the cash. People mention superbike bars- where do I look for those? Is there a picture of them on this site somewhere? As you can see I am new at this... Any ideas will be appreciated.

Chaperal has a nice set - inexpensive and your choice of colors, links in the Links you can't find here section of this KV. They'll set you to XBS height - very comfortable for all around use - esp. in city! Don't forget grips! They are cheap come in lots of colors and choices and trying to reuse the origionals is a very difficult, trying, near impossible task! Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

I live about 40 minutes from Chaparral and happen to have some parts on order there- looks like things are starting o take shape for my bike! hahaha yamaha credit cards work for Buell parts at bike stores hahaha (evil laughter)

Hey EZ just to let you know I installed the bars and like them very much- I chose to drill holes for the controls to mount rather than the duct tape method, and I ended up tilting them down just a hair too much but I am already used to it... other than that they went on very easily and have plenty of clearance so I guess I did it right. What do they put that left grip on with- superglue?

Some of you have showed some interest in the Banke rearsets, and I finally remembered to snap a couple of decent pics.

Anyone know the thread size of our mirrors? I'm looking at replacements from various places and I see a lot of them have 10mm thread size listed, is that what we've got? Any shared experiences with replacements would be appreciated.

10mm is the correct size - 9mm if you use the unnescessary vibration damper - no one does - lol

All . . . .little help, please . . .. . I'm taking my wife's riding re-education to the next level (she rode a great deal in the 70s/80s, and is picking back up again now that our daughter's out of the house) . . .

her hand is not long enough to cover the front brake comfortably while riding . ..

I have one of those adjustable brake levers (from American Sport Bike) on my M2, and would like to put something similar on her Blast . . . they look the same (lever, master cylinder, ya da ya da ya da), but I'm reluctant to put something on the brake system, hoping that it will work.

any data?

thanks

Bomber - those should work - I say this because one of my lazy goals - still not done - is to switch out the silver Blast levers for the M2 black levers. Also the CRG units work real well - heres a review from the archives http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/20164/25302.html?1051035175 You can find a link to them in the Thumper KV section under links to stuff you can't find here!
