Friend of mine traded for a CBR1000, and I'm seriously considering it - I'm getting tired of the silly issues the 1125s have. No kidding. Western Reserve has a Honda dealer in back and they were selling new old stock '08 CBR1000's for 7995, just a grand more than the 1125. To me the CBR is the ugliest superbike, but dammit I'd be riding right now instead of wondering WTF is taking so long to fix my Buell. |

Red, take your philosophy, "I'm a fatalist" Don't spend a cent, jump of a cliff and you will hit terminal velocity of about 0-120mph pretty quick using only 1 ahp, Australian human power. Oh and before you jump sign your R over to me. There's more to a bike than just some dyno HP #'s. And if you want reliability get a refrigerator or some fat chick as both are reliable but you wouldn't want to ride em' everyday. |

The fundamental problem is that the 1125s, especially the 2008s, are glitchy. The ownership experience for many is "Ride it, wait for the next thing to break/have issues, hope the dealership covers it, repeat." Combine this with inconsistent dealerships and it can get really frustrating, really fast. There's no reason a modern bike should be unable to start after 60 hours of sitting. Last time mine did this, I took it in and was told everything was normal. I'm hoping the new dealership I found knows what's going on and can order the new cluster, and that they're not backordered. I've said it before, but I'll repeat it here: The 1125R is a great bike when riding it, but it's a bitch to live with. Not the good kind, either. It stinks up the garage (some dealerships cover this under warranty, some don't), it has clutch leakage issues, it has cluster drain issues, the early ECU flashes were rubbish (not helped by dealers swearing they'd updated it when they hadn't), and they're generally a pain to live with. Not all of them, though. Some are perfect, some are trainwrecks. The quality is inconsistent. There's a reason the big 4 Japanese bike makers sell millions of bikes a year - because they are all, at this point, stupidly reliable. They start when it's cold, they don't drain the battery, they tend to have the little issues worked out *before* the bike ships, and you can get on one, ride the piss out of it, and not worry about it having problems or deciding it doesn't want to start. |

Neither my 08 nor 09 have been glitchy.
quote:The ownership experience for many is "Ride it, wait for the next thing to break/have issues, hope the dealership covers it, repeat."
Thats how it works for every vehicle I have owned, yet dealer covers it no questions asked, despite how minor or major any of my issues have been over the years.
quote:Combine this with inconsistent dealerships and it can get really frustrating, really fast.
Yep, all brands have inconsistent dealerships, remind me to tell you about my Suzuki some time.
quote:There's no reason a modern bike should be unable to start after 60 hours of sitting.
No reason any vehicle shouldn't start after 60 hours.
quote:I've said it before, but I'll repeat it here: The 1125R is a great bike when riding it, but it's a bitch to live with. Not the good kind, either. It's not a bitch to live with. The gas smell "issue" if yours is doing it, has a quick and easy fix, regardless whether your dealer will cover it under warranty (speak to HD support if they won't), there is no clutch leak issue, as that is fixed by the updated piston and seals. Yes the early ECM flashes were less than stellar, but they fixed those too. There are 0 outstanding issues with the 1125's.
quote:Not all of them, though. Some are perfect, some are trainwrecks. The quality is inconsistent.
Many are perfect, a select few are train wrecks, quality is no more inconsistent than any other brand or any other vehicle on the market.
quote:There's a reason the big 4 Japanese bike makers sell millions of bikes a year
Yes, they have been around for decades, have well established dealer networks and assembly lines globally, and make a wide variety of excellent motorcycles. They aren't small companies with one assembly line making a limited type of motorcycles and by hand.
quote: because they are all, at this point, stupidly reliable.
You mean stupid electrical gremlins, stupidly expensive repair costs, stupidly expensive wait times on parts, stupid dealer techs that can't figure out problems? Yes, I had an 04 Suzuki GS500 down for 2 months at a dealer waiting on parts while the dealer troubleshooted why my headlight wouldn't turn on. 2 months later, new main wiring harness came, didn't fix the issue. I got them to give me back my bike, they wanted ridiculous amounts of money for diagnostic times, but I ended up getting out of that because they never fixed it.
quote:They start when it's cold, they don't drain the battery,
My Suzuki had issues with the choke, and probably related to the headlight it would quickly drain the battery.
quote:they tend to have the little issues worked out *before* the bike ships
Interesting, considering the GS500 was around for 20 something years before I got mine!
quote:and you can get on one, ride the piss out of it, and not worry about it having problems or deciding it doesn't want to start
I have no need to add anymore comments, because it would be redundant. |

Frank: "there is no clutch leak issue, as that is fixed by the updated piston and seals." Hopefully the second installation of the updated piston and seals on my bike fixes the nonexistent clutch leak issue. If it doesn't, you know I'll keep whining about it! |

First Honda I owned would run the battery down if I used the horn or headlight. First Triumph I owned galled the bore and siezed up leaving me stranded in the middle of the everglades. First Buell I owned (used, sold with ESP) was back at the dealer every three days for mysterious malfunctions and finally the transmission grenaded. Buell refused to honor the ESP and I ended up having it rebuilt on my own dime. My 2008 1125r on the other hand has been completely reliable except for the clutch leak, but even that did not leave me stranded. Machines are going to need service sooner or later, so just pick one you like and stick with it, the grass aint greener, the water aint sweeter, either side of the hill. |

A local dealer has '07 Cbr 1000's for $5995. I guess those weren't selling too well to still have some in stock. Any of you guys sick of your 1125R I'll be happy to take it off your hands for a reasonable price. Of course that price would have to reflect all the problems you mention. I'll suffer through with it so you don't have too. |

The CBR1000RR hasn't sold well for several reasons, but one of the more widespread ones on the internet is an apparent thirst for oil. Not all, but some of them have been reported to consume more than 1 quart every 1000 miles. This was also reported in the long term test in Motorcyclist magazine a while ago. I wish Redscuell would have bought one of those bikes, so he could enlighten everyone on the CBR forums with his redesign efforts. |

I laugh at stuff like this. I have owned 3 buells and 2 jap bikes since 04. All 3 of the buells are still running (I still own 2 of them) the 2 jap bikes (who both had less miles than any one of the buells I have or do own) are both dead one from a rod threw the block (01 zx9r) and the other had a piston seize (02 f4i) |

I love when people go from a bike that turns to a Busa. All it says to me is "yea, I was too scared to lean over, so I just went and got a sweet Busa.....does anyone know where I can get some chrome?" |

"There's a reason the big 4 Japanese bike makers sell millions of bikes a year - because they are all, at this point, stupidly reliable." Yeah well here are the stats as provided by WebBike World: Sorry about the format. Motorcycle exports were down 45.7% from 2008 levels. Motorcycle Production Figures by Manufacturer - Japan Calendar Year 2009
Make | Units | Change from Previous Year (%) | Honda | 196,179 | 58.2 (-41.8) | Suzuki | 163,865 | 47.0 (-53%) | Yamaha | 161,640 | 46.2 (-53.8%) | Kawasaki | 123,146 | 64.4 (-35.6%) | Others | 71 | 75.5 (-24.5%) | Total | 644,901 | 52.6 (-47.4%) | Now that is domestic (U.S.) sales, but I think the numbers speak volumes. They didn't list reliability stats, but since they are Japanese made and we all know that means Rock Solid Reliability (right Toyota), I guess we are all entitled to our opinion. Sales went down because of the economy, not because of reliablity. I ride the lot with a guy who has an 04 636 with almost 50k miles, and hes never done anything other than basic maint. Jap bikes run forever if you take care of them. |

Interesting, because Triumph sales are up. 2009 had record sales for them.

Most vehicles will run forever if you take care of them. There are several hundred thousand mile XB's, and some 1125's are not far behind |

Im not saying their any better than Buell, but im saying Jap bikes really do go forever, so how can you use that as a point for why their sales have gone down? Especially when theres something as blatant as our economy going on. As far as Triumph, their sales dont even start to compete with the jap market, so they have more wiggle room. Id buy just about any make of bike before a Triumph anyways, theyre junk. That 3 cylinder stuff is a joke. |

I think someone needs to own a triumph or ride one before they say they are junk. People called buell junk yet never owned one. All vehicles have reliability issues some don't. Depends on what crew was assembling them and what day. Fact of life. Spend some time on a bike model specific forum and I am pretty sure that you will find that jap bikes have issues as well. Funny thing about the forums you hear about all the bad stuff but you don't hear about the people that never have issues and run their bikes forever. |

Yeah I know, blasphemous for a Buell forum, but I have to be honest. While the Buell is a great bike, it's doesn't bring a S&*$ eating grin to my face like the Speedie... |

My 1125r is parked next to my '95 Speed Triple, which has given me 65,000 trouble-free miles. Both are black, both are torquey and both excel at 'real world' riding. Both exist because of an individual man with a vision- in the Triumph's case that man is John Bloor, a zillionaire who started (and runs) the company because he chose to, not because a focus group gave him the idea. Both bikes share the property of having great all-around power and rideability, but both are less powerful and have less top speed than less expensive Japanese bikes, so I can understand how people who base their conclusions on magazine numbers consider them sub-par. They could hardly be more different in other ways, though, since my Triumph is a big, heavy, long-wheelbased freight-train of a motorcycle, and its triple motor makes a hair-raising howl that is thrilling, while the 1125 is like a caffienated go-kart and sounds (to me) more like an industrial compressor than a motorbike. Of course my 1125 would leave my Speed Triple for dead in any contest of performance- speed, handling, whatever, but it has 60,000 miles to go before it will earn the same weight in my heart. Not that I'm giving up either of them before they pry my cold, dead buttocks from the seat. |
