I've seen both Touratech and Palmer offer a side stand foot extension which gives the side stand a bigger footprint so you don't sink into soft ground as much. It just bolts on and would be easy to remove again, but why not just weld another piece of steel to the bottom of the existing one? It's more permanent and it would cost a little to powder coat, but is seems like an easy enough mod. Has anyone done this? Any reason not to? |

It would add to the length of the side stand on solid surfaces. I personally don't think the UlyX leans far enough over as it is. It seems real easy to unsettle on the side stand as it is. I would like to shorten the side stand and add one of those if I was going to be off pavement alot. |

The XT has a nice big foot on the kickstand, I think some X riders have switched to the XT stand as I recall. |

The XT sidestand is too short. Both the 09 X and XT share the same large foot. |

Froggy - Could you elaborate as to why you think the XT stand is too short? I would expect it to be shorter than the X since the XT has a lower ground clearance. I'm wondering if I could get an XT side stand and probably be happy with it on my X? I wonder if the bags loaded would make it feel like it would tip over towards the side stand? I would rather add a wider foot to a too short stand, than shorten the one I have, not sure I would trust it once shortened. |

The further it leans, the more stress on the kickstand and bolt. I'd be quite worried about putting that much shorter kick stand on it. The touratech/Palmer bracket will work, as well as welding a foot on it. But the cleanest setup would be to just upgrade to the 2009+ sidestand, which has a larger foot from the factory. |

I have thought about adding a short section of tubing/pipe to make the kick stand a little longer. If the kickstand is down hill at all, it feels like it want to tip over, I've even had the front wheel off the ground before due to this issue. I already have an 09 XT with long foot on the stand. |

My Uly came with a real nice piece of wood in the bar bag in case I need it. |

My 09 Uly came with a different stand than the 06s. I has about 6 inches of footprint on it. Might want to consider just switching to an 09. |

Drunk_Uncle - when you say 6" footprint, do you mean the circumference of is the pad, or is the pad actually 6" long? Does anyone have an '09 parts manual who could look up the part number for the sidestand? Good points have been made about the side stand being on the verge of being too long already, and the danger of higher load on the bolts if it were shorter. For those with an '09 or '10, what do you think of the newer style sidestand. Does the footprint seem sufficient? |
