Since the harness update i have noticed thats the voltage ( reading on gauge cluster ) drops down to 11.8v while sitting in heavy stop and go traffic ( bike never went over 15 mph for 10 minutes ) .. I haven't had to jump start it yet...Any ideas??

just keep an eye on it. Did the engine light and the battery light come on? Once that happens stator is fried. If it does not then you are okay that is pretty low. Also check your codes. Mine had p0562 error which is a system voltage error.

Did You get a New Stator or just Harness?

Did this happen prior to your "update" and if so to what extent?

The charging system update *could* (and an engineer can feel free to correct me) cause the system to drop a little, especially in hot conditions.

From reading the instruction sheet when it first came out (sorry, don't have a personal copy), the update has a relay that will shut off one leg of the charging system to cut heat at the stator. That tells me the system could exhibit a voltage drop for a bit. The update/reflash also includes software that will detect a low V condition that goes on for too long, and will intervene and turn the stator back to full power to keep voltage at an acceptable level.

The update was NOT to keep voltage high.

The update is to keep stator temperatures LOW.

Peterson's HD in Miami installed the new harness in my 09 1125r yesterday. It ran fine for about 5 minutes before the low voltage warning light came on. A quick check showed NO charging at all! HD says the stator is probably fried and they're overnighting a new one to them. I'll update this when (if?) they get this fixed.

The factory allocates 1.5 hours to to do the install. So far they've spent 8 hours!

Ugh, that's exactly what I got this last weekend, first the system voltage error, then the battery light AND engine light, at certain point the bike didn't start anymore and I parked it. I tried yesterday (it has a battery tender) after checking the connection to the battery and it started no problems, I thought it was just a connection... i guess not. I am taking the bike to get the recall done this coming weekend, i hope it starts!! .. ugh.

The battery tender may get you to the dealer. Or it may not even go a mile. Luckily mine quit before I could get to the freeway instead of on the freeway. Anyhow if the stator goes the bike will turn off and that will be that hopefully you can pull over and of course pull in the clutch. I had to tow mine.

Look at this way blackstripes you will get a new stator, new harness to fix the stator overheat issue and the most current flash. Remind them about the flash just in case they forget.

I have 1500 miles on mine now. Since all of the updates. Bike is running better than ever. The only thing I got going on is front wheel clunk that I feel in the handle bars dealer is going to check my forks and head bearings soon as I can get it in. Just annoying more than anything.

I wouldn't worry too much about lower voltage (your 11.8) at lower RPMs wtih the upgrade as that is what the upgrade is going to do. It shuts down part of the stator to keep it from overheating (more of a 'patch' of a bad design than upgrade). This will reduce it's output and cause the voltage to go lower.

What happens to the voltage as you increase RPMs? I suspect it will increase as it should.

Doesn't sound like an issue unless you get the low voltage light on a regular basis while sitting in traffic or the bike won't start after a lot of slower around-town riding.

Update on my 09 1125r at peterson's HD in Miami. Harley said they would overnight a new stator to me. That was yesterday. Today they say they are back ordered until at least April 30th!! The Miami Service Advisor, Rich Rasko, called around though and found one at a dealer in KY. Should have it next week.

"Did the engine light and the battery light come on? Once that happens stator is fried.

Yes, both indicators lit up. Is this just a coincidence or did the new harness and/or flash (M3HUS142) cause the stator failure? If that's the case, I'd recommend holding off on the "upgrade" until they have a shelf full of replacement stators at HD.

My bike went in March 29th, last word I heard, they were on backorder till the 9th (tomorrow)...The 30th!!! thats a little ridiculous...

Thanks for all the reply's. As soon as i get moving and out of traffic, the voltage goes up back to normal...The Batt and Check engine light has not come on and the bike starts every time...when the voltage drop did occur,i was in stop and go ( more stop ) traffic and was 88 degrees outside...ill keep riding!

Guys we are a very smart collective!!! can't somebody on this site learn how make a fake stator. F**k HD. I mean it's us against them. Right!?!?! It's just a resistor or something...... What the f**k is a stator anyway?

Mine seems unchanged since the charging subharness install. My low during hot temp slow-moving traffic today was 13.7v, and it idles in my drive at 13.9 to 14.0 Wouldn't know it had been installed if I didn't see the extra electronics under the seat ...

What the f**k is a stator anyway?

It is the stationary part of the generator. It is made of a large circle of metal with coils of wire at different intervals which are then epoxy'd and baked in place. Magnets attached to a flywheel on the crankshaft (usually) rotate within the circle and generate the Voltage/Current that powers everything. It is a very specific part for a bike, expensive, and not easily reproduced without a lot of expensive equipment and skills.

For more detail, see the article at:
http://www.electrosport.com/technical-resources/li brary/articles/motorcycle-stators.php

A picture of what a typical one looks like is at:

Rode the CR today with the new harness that was installed last week.
Started out at 14V when I left the house. It was on a tender in the garage.
Highway riding it was reading anywhere from 13.4 to 13.8

Stuck in NYC traffic heading of Long Island and was stop and go for 35 mins. No more than 10MPH.
The lowest it got was 12.2v

This is going to seem like a strange question. But since my voltage levels haven't really changed (regardless of the temp/traffic/whatever conditions), is there a way to tell my newly installed charging subharness and relay are connected properly and working?

Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with normal voltage levels and all. But if something isn't happening that should now be happening, I might encounter that stator issue that prompted the letter in the first place. It looks right - How can I be sure, or at least know not to worry?

A battery will never put out more then 12.x volts or so... so if you see 13 volts when the bike is running, it is coming from the stator.

Just got my bike back from the dealer and took it out yesterday for the first ride after the new harness was installed. When I start it up the engine light came on but then went away after 5 second or so,and it did this multi times when I would restart the bike going from destination to destination. Is this some thing I should worry about?

My engine light comes on as well after the install. I never noticed it before. Like you said goes off after a few seconds.

Engine light on for 5 seconds means its a historical code. That means your dealer didn't clear the historical codes after flashing per instructions.

Not to change topics but does anybody have any axle grease i could borrow because i'm in the middle of getting F**ked by HD and some grease would really be appreciated!!! and a used stator to bite down on, there not good for anything else. oh wait HD is using them as c**k rings to make this F**k last longer. Us riders, Eric Buell and a great bike. all getting F**ked at the same time. and on top of all that i can't even say "HD to go F**K yourself" cause they all ready have

SO I should be able to take it back and they can clear the codes?
Does it hurt anything running it like this until I get there?

stators can be rewound, but the process to rewind a stator is no where near as cheap to produce one from new, we sometimes have to get electric motors rewound and the cost is nearing that of a new motor nowadays.

You can clear them yourself if you have ECMspy, or after starting the bike something like 50 times they will clear out. Nothing to worry about as they are false alarms.
