I was talking with a riding friend of mine who was at his BMW shop when a new buyer loaded a brand new R1200RT into the back of a pickup truck by driving it up a single 2X10 that he had propped against the tailgate. He made a running start and rolled that sucker right up into the truck. The guy said he'd been doing it for years...no thanks, I don't think I am going to try it. Riding up the full width ramp on my utility trailer is exciting enough for me.
I bought a pair of loading ramps from harbor freight. I put them both on the tail gate of the truck. I use one to walk up while I have the bike in first gear and just ease it up the other ramp. It works pretty good as long as you take it slow. To get it out I use the same procedure, only using the front brake to slowly back the bike down the ramp while I walk down the other.
I use an ATV aluminum ramp and walk the bike up with the assistance of bike power. I would just ride the bike up...but I'm scared of stopping too soon and tipping over with my foot going in between the ladder rails!
i got one of those fold up double wide atv ramps that works pretty good. it's good enough for the buells but i wouldn't ever think about running the ultra up it. able to ride up and ride down it with out complications. i'm not to keen on the 2x idea myself.
I have a tri fold atv ramp. Works ok, just be sure not to step through the rails... I have taken a street glide up it. That was a little hairy! They do make some great ramps that are arched and much longer, but they are expensive.
You could always get a cheap utility trailer used. They work pretty good too.
My wife got me one for christmas, no idea what brand but its pretty cool. she's kimg on here, maybe find her and send a pm. I use that for the bike, ride it up into our diesel 4x4 no issues. I do have a pair of 2x8s attached to each other with straps, that I spread on either side as foot supports with the straps under the bike ramp. The straps keep them from kicking out to the side if I put a side load on 'em with my feet.
My old method was the same, but instead of the shiny foldup aluminum ramp for the bike, I had a third 2x8 with a pair of 2x4s bolted to it to make a U shape. The U shape helps keep the bike from going off the side of the ramp Oh, and I guess there's a strength factor as well, but a Buell is light (compared to the FLHP I rode up a single 2x8x10' into a box truck one time...*that* was fun!).
Ride the baby right up, and let the bed come down. - If you go to far/fast the bed comes slaming down. But hey that's what friends are for, to laugh at your ass, as you try not to wet yourself/drop the bike
