The XB will sometime exhibit mild head shake cause by improper set up or worn tires. The Michelin Pilots seems to eliminate it. The head shake is usually not even notice unless you take you hands off the bars. Slowing down makes it go away.

A tank slapper will get worse if you slow down and the classic, and really only cure for a real one, is to hammer the throttle and hope. Not sure why this works but it has something to do with making the front lighter and changing the trail.

I don't think you could get a Buell of any sort to do one without a major mechanical problem. Heck one of the common Buell engineer drills was to wind it up to about 100 and hammer the bars hard in one direction, see how long it took to straighten out.

I have scared myself silly by grabbing a huge handful of brake right after had let the brake off and leaned the bike over, a huge brain fart, the dam front end nearly jumped and the bars shook once right and then left and then we just went around the bend. Damn thing is way better than I am fortunately.

look at the crash that happened to darksabre, I are you saying this guy is making his story up. He's out of action for a year and crashing due to tank slapper sucks. My husband had the same thing happen from just hitting the brakes hard at 60mph on a new buell with less that 150 miles on it and the bike is set up right. you could see the bike see the bars and whole front end shacking back and fourth violently. Isn't it funny that my softail 1340 stayed rock stable and his xb went crazy as we both braked about the same time. For a new model sports bike it should have handled alot better.

Lady how do you know it was set up right. How do you know it wasn't a riders error. You weren't on the bike. I've been riding Buell's for 11 years. Have I had a tank slapper.... Yes. Thats because I did something wrong.

That is funny! Now go home http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Content/Pages /home.html

Oh, and for your poll, no Buell tank slappers here in 20,000 miles and 2 track days.

Best cure is riding lessons.

What you have described. . . based on doing test riding of Buells and other performance sport bikes in 44 states. . . is the result of rider input not design.

You can waste money on an attorney if you'd like but I'd suggest investing in riding lessons. . . they'll provide the quickest solution.

I had a tank slapper, due to hard braking. Rear tire left the ground, came back down misaligned, wiggle wiggle bam. From the sounds of it your husband panic braked for a deer? Very easily could have gotten the rear a little too light, and misaligned.

Lets see, less than 150 miles on the bike, its plain and obvious your husband has not gotten used to the bike, not to mention it is unlikely you had the tires, brakes and other components broken in and dialed in yet.

We are tired of your trollish posts and will not stand for it. You are out.

Please, folks, let the source for this statement be given prior to any more troll bait being ate.

No tank slappers here - lol - hell I'm working on suspension settings just to get my CR to handle tight twisties as well as my Blast. They set it up to a guy my size they said, but some stuff was off, and I re-did it, minus a 1/2 click on rear rebound, and its a lot more flick-able and easily stable on slow cornering speeds now, much better, still thinking about what to try next. No tank slappers, and I rode through winter, icey roads, rain, etc. not a wiggle or jiggle - and that's with an incorrectly set up suspension - lol - I still want it to transition faster though - I'll get it dialed in - took 2 years to dial in the Blast with its upgraded custom suspension. I'm patient, - heck - that was the first time I took off the seat - with 3500 plus miles - lol - I even commuted on it when I was rebuilding the Blast clutch -

Hope the response your getting on your "Poll" is what you expected. For what it is worth I bought the XB12Ss 3 years ago because I thought the handling would make me a better rider all other things being equal.....which it has. And bottom line it is just a lot of fun to ride if you know what your doing skill wise and have taken some time with suspension setup including tire pressure etc. Results?-No tank slap -EVER

i saw someone on a softtail 1340 jump off the bike and blow ten guys, right there on the spot. i guess that means that all softail 1340 riders like blowing lots of guys.

I had issues with the head bearings on the fork... but it was after I may or may not have hit a dirt berm at 35 mph and performed a 'HARD' landing.... but I can neither confirm nor deny that it was off road and ridden in a manner other than was constructed and designed for.....

I had a tank slapper once. I went in a bit hot, following my buddy on his Aprilia Mille though some really tight twisties.

I grounded hard on the right side, the bike stood up, and went into a lock to lock tank slapper, which slowed it down, went across the road, and dropped in a pile of leaves.

Was able to ride her home.

After that, I put on new Metzlers, added a steering damper and a fork brace, and set up the suspension by measuring sag, and firming up the damping.

Not a problem since.

Opps......, did I forget to mention I was riding my Harley?

I mean, nobody gets a tank slapper on an XB.

Do they?

Tankslapping?

Isn't that a euphamism for "self-gratification?"

... kinda like my Daddy caught me tank slapping when I was a teenager and hid all his Playboy magazines?

LOL, that's just too damned funny not to comment. And yet, it's so incredibly DUMB, I can't think of anything fitting enough to say. Perhaps something about expecting Harley-style braking from a ZTL setup? Meh, not even worth fleshing out.

MSF lesson of the day: don't grab your brakes. She said they were dodging a deer in the road in the darksabre thread.

3 cheers for the Banhammer!

Had a bad case of "Tank Slappers" back in `54 on my Schwinn, rear bumper of a parked car stopped them immediately and the trunk
cushioned the fall. Another time on an ElectraGlide while decel, new front tire cured that one.

Still strange that though I'm new on my 9R I still haven't been able to make it shake it's head whether accelerating (or even getting both wheels off the ground coming over the crest of a hill) or grabbing as much front break as I dare to grab (which is a pretty good amount as I try to test for tire traction limits). Compared to my old air cooled Katana, this bike is absolutely 1000 percent better in every way except the stock mirrors. Only ever had a couple times where the Kat wanted to shake it's head, and most of those happened just before I ditched the Dunlop for a Pirelli.

This is a tank slapper:

and a heel clicker, shin splinter and ball buster all in one. I've seen that clip before.

Has she officially been sent back under the bridge?

Just grab a picture off the web and find a vinyl sticker cutter shop. Don't forget the red circle and slash. If you make it all a single color it would probably be cheap and some places might laugh and cut them from scrap for free. Alternate would be to find some sheets of adhesive backed vinyl and cut them yourself. Check cycle gadgets which is where I got my sheets of black reflective material.

The vinyl reflective black stuff I did on my bike is OK for hand cutting with a poor template. I need to find something that reflects better as I'm not really getting the effect I wanted. The black letters on my white tank looks great compared to the orange letters though! Same for the headlight "eyebrows".
