A few years ago, a bunch of badwebbers got together and conducted a fairly intense exhaust shootout for all of the easily obtained US XB exhausts. Prior to that test, the data that was present was all on different bikes, different dynos, different operators, different altitudes, different weather, etc. Terry at JT&S and I have been talking about doing that same testing for the 1125 market for some time. We've locked down the date for doing it in approximately 5 weeks on the JT&S dyno in the days just after the AMA races conclude there on May 16th. We have a bike, we have the room, we have discussed the test plan but haven't written it down yet. It will be similar to the XB testing, with a few changes: 1) The XB testing was for both an XB9 and an XB12. This will be using a single 1125R only. 2) The sound testing in the original XB test was a bust. We had some setup problems, and determined that recording sound in a dyno room is pointless, as the dyno drum/tire noise is too prevalent in the actual sound files. So we’ll set up a drive by mic and capture the sound in the external environment just outside the shop. 3) We should be able to use the EBR tunable race ECM for fueling correction. But we’d probably swap the stock ECM in to establish how far off the pipe runs on the stock map with AFVs set at 100 4) This will likely be limited to slip-ons only, as we won't have time to do the engine pivot to mount up full systems. I am going to contact all the exhaust manufacturers over the next few days to see who wants to play. For now, please respond here and tell me who you'd like to see contacted. If you have an email contact of someone at one of the manufacturers that you have communicated with, please provide that to me. I don't know how many of the European pipe makers will want to play, but I'd guess most of the US ones will. If one or more manufacturer won't provide a pipe, we'll see what we can do to scare one up somewhere, but we don't have a lot of time to get this prepped. I suspect most will want to participate, as it was GREAT publicity for the players in the 2006 XB test. I'll start a short list, please feel free to add: Jardine RT5 FMF Apex D&D HMF Drummer Brian Reinhart's KEDA (version??) Barker TorqueHammer FreeSpirit HR1 Riot I'm sure there are several more, let me know. Al |

I really wish I could help again, that was a lot of work, but a lot of fun for the XB test. I will be happily awaiting the results! Thanks Al. |

Al, I have a KEDA RT-1 pipe, and will gladly loan it out. It's not like Dean has boxes of them laying around. |

HAWK is finishing up his 1125 pipe. Not sure what his expected time frame is, but that may be worth a shot. |

My vote would be for the Torque Hammer... especially if u use Dris's tune!! for the others like the Jardine which has it's own tuning box, i think that should be used because that's how most people will use it!! Thanks |

Another thing i would like to see is Albert666's longer front header used in combination with one of the better/best slipons. Of course, he's in the UK and may not want to part with it, lol. |

Al, mail me at dris@twinmotorcycles.nl I send you a exhaust for free for testing, You need to mail me the details where to send it too. I assume you are going to use a stock ecm or a tuned ECM, are you going to make a tune for every exhaust or are you using the same ecm for all exhaust with the same temperatures in the dyno room (same weather conditions) Are you going to use the same amount of brake on the roll on all exhaust. Good info keep up and let me know what you need. |

I would like to add the HPE race pipe, and am happy to see that someone added the EBR Full Race pipe. Sad to see that your only testing slip-ons. Maybe doing a separate test for the few full systems? Looking forward for the outcome. (Message edited by mrrickbo on April 08, 2010) |

The real thanks for this will be to JT&S, because it'll be Jim and Terry that are will be doing a lot of this and providing the facilities and tuning. I'll do the front end logistics and back end data crunching and report. We won't have the time to do full systems in this test. It takes too long to rotate the engine down to mount the headers for that. When we did the XB test, we did it for both XB9 and XB12 bikes. While one bike was on the dyno, another team was putting a different pipe on the other bike, so when one rolled off the dyno, another rolled right on. In this case, it will be ONE bike that does all the testing, which is critical for doing comparison testing like this. I'll add the ones that folks have brought up here. I'll be contacting each of the vendors, if they don't have one to share, I'll put out a message here to see if anyone has one they can lend for the test. If we can't scare one up, that one will be left out. It'll be a full couple days, dawn to very late night, regardless. All the testing will be full throttle only, as in the XB testing. We'll tune full throttle response for the same AFR for all pipes, as flat as we can get in a reasonable amount of time. We'll try to keep the conditions as close to the same as we can, but there will be temperature changes from dawn to dusk that will be out of our control. We'll note those differences, and do some control runs as best we can to normalize the data. Brian Reinhart's pipe was mentioned forever ago here on the board, he's made a few iterations of it, and his fab guy has made fixtures. He's been waiting for this test and it's results to determine whether he would market it. Here's a couple pictures:
Easy, thanks, the place to send it is directly to JT&S performance, http://www.jtsperformance.com/ 29731 Arnold Drive, Building L Infineon Raceway Sonoma, California 707.996.6103 More later.... Al |

Will you be using manufacturer supplied maps if they're available for each pipe or just doing manual tuning for a specific AFR? What are you after on this, such as 13:1 or a different number and how will it be adjusted, globally, manually mapped and also for individual cylinders? Will you be using piggyback units or just the stock ecm and race one? I have 3 different current designs and a 4th one in development, do you want all 3 that are done or just one? Sorry about all the questions, but it's only 5 weeks out, so I'll need to get busy on some stuff soon. |
