Big ups to Badweb!! Finally finished my open airbox mod. Goes in sync with breather reroute with catchcan. Also waiting on my HID relay harness to install my pair of DDM 55w ; )

Takes some time but well worth it. Can't ride until my new oil lines come in (sometimes this week). Also got the race map and cable ready to rumble...

Process- cut everything away but the lid. DO breather reroute (you'll need the breather hose holes). Drill out 2 holes through lid. Attach lid to baseplate and filter with threaded rods and rubber washers for airtightness. Thanks to all for posting up this process and pics! Here's mine:

Nice. You'll like the sound. If you're using a newer airbox cover with the grill behind the gas cap you can cover up the hole in the frame so more air goes through the left scoop to cool the engine. Or you can cut openings in the cover for fresh air.

Ahhhh yes! Open airbox, sharp tools, a beer, and a smoke! EXACTLY how I work on this stuff. Looks great dood!

This one looks a lot better than the last one! You should probably ditch the paper filter for a K&N.

I'm still not sold on the idea as I know a lot of thought and engineering went into the airbox on these bikes, possibly more design work than on most other sport bikes.

@Billy, I'll check that out. Don't remember a grill but I could be wrong.

Gnutt- hell yeah, it was my dads bday friday and easter..so much (3 30 packs) was consumed lol

@greg- haha thanks mang. It is a K&N, the red coloring washed out with spring cleaning... no harm I don't think.

That is true Greg, but I think about all the Al Gore bs they had to do to please CARB/EPA. My stock airbox was so restrictive on my Focus...CAI put 13 more horses on it (dyno'd). Sometimes I guess things can be for the worst but I saw everyone else loved the thing!

Greg does have a legit point, on the 1125R you will lose 20mph on your top speed with an open airbox vs stock.

I haven't seen any concrete data how this affects the XB, but it looks fantastic under a translucent cover and it sounds amazing too. : )

Dayum didn't know that!! Then again, the 1125 is fast enough as it is LOL

Now to route the fuel vent hose...

I haven't made a vid of mine yet but I will. If it's anything like the CAI on my car.. woot!

Funny...all this open air box stuff..

All one has to do is look at the little throttle body diameter..then wonder gee...why am I opening up this air intake far enough to "overfeed" the 1125R/CR....?

Just had the same discussion with the old owner of the XB I just bought. He did one of the many "open the air box" modifications. We talked a little, he thought about it for a minute...said, "yea, never thought of it that way".

Must be a "mines bigger than yours" thing.

Strange, my K&N has a screen around the outside as well as the red coloring.

When speaking of a car, the performance envelope must be considered... A Focus is not a race car and definitely only has an airbox to give the filter a place to sit. On the Buell it was used to change the torque curve and the throttle "snap". On the 03 to 0? where there is a hole through the frame and a scoop I'd like to think there is a small amount of ram air induction happening. On the 1125 there is ram air so removing the air box would definitely mess up the airflow at speed.

These damn engineers are pretty smart people, and they wouldn't do this if there wasn't a good reason. They could meet EPA with no airbox and could have used the room for fuel.

But all that said, if you like it then do it and enjoy it. The sound would be kind of nice. And the see through covers would be neat like this.

Er... weren't there some dyno runs showing the open airbox mode had real improvements?

I did it for what I thought would be an overall improvement. Been on Badweb like maybe 2 years and always thought from readint that open airbox made it rev faster, more torque, more power... etc. Whatever happens, I'm stuck with it now LOL Hopefully it'll compliment the Race Map (via ECMSpy), catchcan/breather and my jardine. Now need to see if intake scoop will fit under Sharskinz fairing...

I appreciate the input from all yall!

@Greg...kinda dissapointed I didn't get open airbox, but then again my bikes completley custom painted. Orange see through box would be nice though!!

Dyno runs are funny things... They really only test full throttle, not what happens when you whack the throttle open from a cruising speed. Remember that these are street bikes and not designed primarily to have "binary" throttles like a racing machine might want.

I still say there is more to it than us mere mortals can understand, without regard to what the dyno says since it is such a limited set or conditions. Someone should sit down with Erik and ask him why he needed such a large airbox and to explain the shape choices.

Boost,
The red coloring in the K&N is oil. That oil is what actually traps all of the small particles that are trying to get in your engine and ruin it. I would highly recommend getting a recharge kit from any of your neighborhood auto parts stores and properly cleaning the filter and applying a fresh coat of oil. Your Buell will thank you.

By the way, great job on the mod!! Looks just like the one I bought from Al!!

+ a bajillion on the oil. That filter is useless if not properly oiled.

yeah there is a LOT of rocket science to an airbox.
they are made for airflow and to attenuate the reverberations coming back out the intake on the back side of the valves and out the box.
its not just a hunk of poo box stuffed in there.there is a method to that madness.

Thanks doubled. I actually didn't even remember the American Sport Bike one until after I had done this and someone PMd me about it. Feel kinda bad, I should've bought it. But when I need parts I will be buying from them (I've bought from them before!).

Ahh the red janks was the oil. I soaked the filter in some simple green. It needed a good washing, dirty as hell after 12k. Big ups on not overoiling, I got the official K&N oil from a friend. Will try to not overdo it!

OK, I'll bite... What happens if you over oil it? Does it get sucked down into the motor and foul the plugs? Does it make the filter so that it doesn't allow air through? Does it just run all over and make a mess?

Just makes a mess, AND the engine has to eat some of it when it sucks the excess out of it. I would go slow with oiling it. Just a drop, or spray at a time. Spray it once, and let the oil flow through the element for a minute to see how much the spray or drop expands. This will give you a good idea on where to spray for consistent coverage.

The K&N fluid can also muck up the IAT and O2 sensors.

I switched to a Uni filter.

Yeah never heard of Uni filter. Have seen the Pipercross foam one though, think their sold exlusivley overseas though. TrojanHorse has them for $50, scared to ask about shipping costs though!

Uni is another brand of washable filter.

The IAT should not be damaged by any oils, but the O2 could depending on the composition. I would hope that K&N were smart enough to understand this and make the oil compatible.

Tru true. I'm thinking though why would Buell offer in race kit if it did any damage?

I'm lil scurred now.

Now now, you'll be ok...no need to be scurred.

Just don't over oil and you're fine. No IAT sensor damage, no O2 sensor damage...

My buddy hooking me up with the oil has done it with his R6 so hopefully he knows the right amount and such.
