Bummed; day before 3-day holiday weekend and X1 went down. I know the answer I need is somewhere here on the board, but so much info here now that searching is a time-consuming chore. Hoping someone is intimately familiar with problem and can provide some quick insight. Was pulling away from stoplight, accelerating easily, 3rd gear, about 50mph, motor cut out like fuel was turned off. A second later, seems normal again, bike accelerates for a second or two, then cuts out again. It repeated the ON/OFF cycling a few more times until I pulled her over and shut her down. Had noticed recently that X1 started hard when cold and idled low and lumpy until warmed up. Didn't worry too much 'cause she seemed to run fine once warmed up, until Thursday. Now, X1 will start and idle for a few minutes, then shut down. When she shuts down, it's as if someone disconnected the battery. no idiot lights on dash, no odometer display, nothing. a few seconds later, idiot lights and odometer are ON again. Any thoughts? I gotta get a ride in before the weekend's over. Only mods are Forcewinder XR2 intake, Buell race header and muffler, Buell race ECM. Thanks! Bob |

Mine X1 had exact symptoms. The bike would literally die at freeway speed. Some times it would sputter a bit, but often just simply die with no lights or any other warnings. Found the power relay right below the seat to be bad. The relay assy. was separating from the plastic casing itself. No need to remove the seat, this relay is slightly up and forward of the battery. If it appears to be intact, try to replace it anyway. It might turn out to be a <3$ fix. Hope this helps. Roderick edited by xfudog on July 05, 2003 |

My 00 X1 went through batteries like pez! When the battery dies, so does the bike. Damned FI! Other causes may be related to a failing sensor: 02, AIT, ET, or TPS, Cam Postition. There is a way to jumper two terminals on the diagnostic hookup, and read a list of trouble codes. Try theX1files.com, too. |

Could also be your ignition switch. |

I'm with Hootowl. Sounds like a bad ignition switch. My S3 did the same things till I got a new one. The complete loss of any lights is what makes me think this is what it is. Have you had to ever jiggle the key to get the power to come on? If so get a new switch ASAP before you get starnded again. |

You may have a partial short in the wiring or a bad circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is a thermal unit, and will re-make the contact when it cools. Disconnect the lug wires to the breaker and try a 30 amp fuse (using jumpers) to the wires. The ignition switch is a high failure item, search BadWeb using "Universal Harley-Davidson key". If your bike is going "through batteries like pez!", it may be over-charging. Sealed batteries are killed by overcharging - they gradually lose cranking power, then die. |

...3 in 2.5yrs (16,750mi)! Charging sytem output peaked around 14.3V (as checked across battery terminals w/ multimeter). I always thought all the vibration had something to do with the short battery lifes. |

you know it also could be the O2 sensor.... especially if it is having a hard time idleing. you can get a replacement Bosch sensor at AutoZone or anyother autoparts store... not sure on the part number... but you can get it easily adam |
