Hey guys, I am in the middle of repairing my piece of crap XB, and I hit a snag. I am replacing the entire front end, I got the upper tree off, and the forks off, but I can't get the lower tree to come out. Should it just slide down and out? Is there a tool I should be using? Service manual is useless, it literally just says "Remove lower tree". Anyway the bike is a XB 4.4 gallon with 06 Ulysses/SS trees and 43mm standard Firebolt forks. | ||

How do you have the upper tree off, and not the lower? The steering steam slides up into the upper tree. The only thing that holds the lower tree in place is the stem nut. | ||

Yea upper is completely off except for the clutch cable, but its not connected to the forks or stem at all, and the forks are completely off, including that chrome hex nut cap thing at the top of the steering stem. I tried banging on the stem and the lower tree with a rubber mallet but it wont budge. I did hit a car, it is possible something is damaged and I can't see it. | ||

if you hit a car the stem could be bent slightly. more force required maybe | ||

Sounds like it is time to pound on it with a metal hammer and just replace stem and bearings. Have a cut off tool handy so that once the bearings are both free you can slice through the stem since you won't get the stem past the mushroomed top bearing. How much heat can the powder coat take before it is wrecked? Might be able to heat the frame to expand it and help drop the lower bearing out with the stem |
