So here's my dilemma, I have almost 1k miles on the bike but can't get the bike into the dealership for service for another two weeks. The weather here is beautiful and I would hate to see it go to waste. Should I continue to ride it anyway or would it be best to wait until getting the service done? I understand that the 1k service is typically the most vital out of prolonging the life of the bike. So would it be ok to say go 500 miles over 1k, or should I stick strictly to the 1k guidelines. What do you guys think?

Buy yourself a service manual, save some cash and do it yourself. You won't be wasting any time then : )

I think you should get an oil pan, spend $35 on some oil and a filter, and change it yourself.

Change it yourself, it's easy. Just make sure you replace the O-ring on the drain plug.

Well, when I bought my wife the XB12Scg we did 1200 miles on it before the first oil change. Didn't have a choice, we HAD to get to Homecoming on time. I called HALs a week before we left and scheduled to drop it off with them as soon as we arrived and they took care of it no problem. Bike still runs strong. I think the most important factor is what kind of riding you plan on doing. I'd say you'll prolly be ok but it is very important to get that oil changed within a reasonable amount of time.

I had planned on having them do the initial service then performing everything else afterwards on my own just be sure everything checks out ok. I have the service manual and also used to have an 05XB9SX. So I have a little experience but would rather be safe than sorry for this first time.

You could change the oil yourself, then still take it to them at the 1,500 mark. Your bike would get two oil changes and it would not cost you too much more. My dealer recommended dino oil until 3,000 miles. That stuff is pretty cheap. This way would give you peace of mind.

I think the most critical service they do at 1k is the torque setting of the front primary sprocket. The only reason i know, i purchased a bike with 6k on it, all services done except the 1k. Long story short, front sprocket cam loose = replace ruined crankshaft. Buell took care of the repair, but still not good. If you could check that torque yourself, you would probably be fine.

First of all, you won't get hair growing on your palms if you put another 500 miles on it before oil change, as long as there is enough oil in it, even though the sooner you do it the better.

It might be helpful to understand that unless you are taking it to one of a handful of dealers who are Buell specialists, and have not lost their enthusiasm for Buell or their Buell Tech, you are MUCH better off doing the work yourself.

It is a great way to start to get to know your bike, and feel comfortable working on it yourself.

I took my bike to the dealers twice, felt just like you, they damaged it slightly both times.

If you do the work yourself, you will save time, money, and know it is done right. In my case, it takes a heck of a lot less time to change the oil than drive 100 miles to the nearest competent dealer.

An oil change really only costs about $20 bucks including Mobil One 15W50 and a Supertech 4967 filter if you buy them at WalMarts as I do.

Cost me about $40 including stock filter and Mobil 1 V-twin. I wouldn't even sweat an extra 500 miles or maybe even 1000 miles. O rings are cheap, buy several as you need them on both drain plugs (same size). I bought 5 of them with my filter.

I might be too much of a worrier, but I wouldn't go too far past the 1000 mile mark - and agree with all the others that you could easily do it yourself. Most other bikes change oil around 500-600 miles for break-in just to get all the crap out of the new motor so 1000 miles is already a pretty lengthy interval - of course, I have no scientific evidence to back that up. I guess the bottom line is that it's so easy to change the oil and primary that there's no reason to delay it. Have the dealer do the rest of the checks for you in a couple of weeks.

My 2004 XB12s had it's 1000 mile service done by me at 1200 miles. And I am no genius when it comes to engines.

After the first oil change, the 12s would burn a rear tire every 3500-4000 miles, so the timing for an oil change worked well, so I would just let my dealer do it.

The 12xt got it's 1000 mile service at 1900 miles. The dealer was not too worried and found little issue with the bike.
