Hm, ok, never had this happen before, but there are first for everything. About a week ago I was riding my XB at around 70 mph. Well, when my bike began to bog down (from a previous thread) and I pulled over to see what was up I found the swingarm front and right side of the bike covered in oil. My oil light never came on (it works, checked) so I decided to ride it home to troubleshot everything. Well, I've looked it over, going as far as to remove the fan to see where this came from. Far as I can tell the engine has no leak, nor does anywhere else. All I can figure is I had a huge crap load come from the trans breather. Anyone else had that pipe belch some fluid before? |

this happened to me about a year ago. it was the rear rocker box gasket. blew oil all over my fan and swingarm. freaked the hell out of me. |

Odds are pretty good it's the rear rocker gasket. It isn't real easy to see the source of the leak. Pull off the seat and shine a flashlight down through the openings in the frame above the rear cylinder head. If it's the rear rocker gasket, you'll spot it. An apparently small leak at the gasket looks like a BIG leak by the time the fan sprays it all over the back of your bike. Another possible culprit (and much easier to fix) is one of the PCV hoses; they sometimes pull off or out of the airbox and can spew oil. |

I've got a set of Rocker Box gaskets in my tool box RIGHT NOW - to fix exactly that problem. (I screwed up when putting the top end back together and pinched the temp sensor in the gasket on the rear - and instead of taking another day to re-do it, I just pulled the sensor line out, and torqued it down... and the leak got worse and worse) It's not that bad - takes an afternoon and about $25 in gaskets and seals (and yes, they CAN be gotten at the parts counter) You gotta rotate the engine (not bad once you've done it) |

Already replaced the rocker gasket when I was doing my engine rebuild. Didn't leak during all the testing. I had the fan out while working on another problem and checked that area. Don't see any signs of leaking coming from the gaskets back there. |

I believe you can get overflow out of the transmission vent if the crankshaft seal blows out. Engine oil leaks into the primary and eventually overfills it. It wouldn't hurt to pull the clutch inspection cover and check the level/condition of the trans lube. |

Checked trans level. It's where it should be, no more and no less. Hm.... This has got me confused. I've run the bike to see if it's still happening, no sign of it. |

Rocker box. Same thing happed to my STT. First oil all over the fan killed it While the shop was changing the fan they found the rocker box was where all the oil had come from. At the time it was all under warranity. Doesn't take much of a leak to make a mess and trash the fan. |

Did you check your PVC valves and hoses? |

Sorry, had some keyboard dyslexia there- PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valves (one on top of each rockerbox). |

Well, I've looked all over the bike and can find no signs of oil leakage on the engine anywhere. The only sign I do have it some smoke coming from where the O2 sensor is, but no oil (I'm guessing residue burning off in that area) I've looked while the engine is running for another test in another thread for a separate problem. I can find no signs of oil leaking. Sigh. I might have to lift the frame. I'm still betting that this came from a burp from the trans vent line. Gar, I hate looking for this crap. |

Unless they rerouted your trns vent line.(mine is 08 xb12) the trans vent line is exited just aft of airbox cover next to upper rear shock mount.Your would have oil all over the battery tray etc. I had my Aft rocker box gasket go last fall.My fan and frame below fan had oil on it. The only way I could see leak was to look up from bottom around rear header flange area,It only would seem to leak while riding and " sprayed" backwards. Like said above it is hard to see but that is most likely cause You said smoke next to o2 sensor? thats close to area I could see my leak, At idle its probably weeping and burning off during riding maybe leaking worse? My guess is rockerbox gasket not only the outer one but the little square one I saw get pinched or seal on the breather tube or plastic tube itself cracked. I saw the pinch cause i did it myself. a $1.00 fix but a two hour job. if the gasket is bad make sure you check the head sensor down inside it may be full of burnt oil and will lead to future headaches. skip spark and ect false readings from it. clean it well and check for rubbed parts or splits. I ran into it once on a bike that drove me crazy. Mine was a rub through and at full temp it would read funny and kill power. Hope it helps. mike (Message edited by xoptimizedrsx on April 03, 2010) |

The gaskets were done about a month ago. I tore down the engine to fix a base gasket leak and replaced the gaskets with Cometic gaskets from American Sport Bike. I make very certain to get them on right as this was made easy by the frame being removed. Tomorrow I will be working on fixing an intake leak so I will tear down the bike to check that area anyways just to be sure. As it is, there is no oil on the head temp sensor area or signs of it leaking down the side of the engine. So that is what has me confused. I've run the engine at idle in my garage as I was working on another problem and got the engine hot enough to have the fan come on while running. |

Sigh, well while working on my bike for the other problem. I discovered a leak from the rocker box gasket on the front. Groan, so I guess I will be removing the frame to work on that tomorrow. Gar!!!! |

Ok, pulled the bike apart and took the rocker covers off and retorqued all the rocker box screws to a bit above their tq specs. See if that solves it. If not then I guess the replacement gaskets suck and they will be replaced. |
