The service manual lists a bunch of tools for the job, but I've only glanced at the procedure so I won't say any more. |

Not to jack your thread Hogs, but is there a way to check the steering head bearings without having the pull scale in the manual? I am doing the 10k on the bike and want/need to check them but don't have that tool. |

Whitexc- I went to a sporting goods store and got a cheapo fish scale. Not very expensive. Then went to the grocery store (after checking w/a dictionary to find the correct weight) and 'calibrated' the scale by weighing a gallon of water. Will get you in the ballpark when doing the pull test. Hope this helps, Dave |

Jack it up using the front jack point, prefered to use a rear stand as well for stability. Remove front wheel, mudgaurd, hang caliper under the upper fairing, remove forks, then top triple, knock the lower out with the steering stem. Easy as if the steering stem isn't seized in the inners of the bearing. Take note the orientation of the bearing. Just knock the lower bearing out with a drift and hammer, then sit on the floor and knock the upper out in the same fashion. Buell even put little notches in the frame so it is easier. Pull them in using threaded rod and a suitable asortment of washers. If you really rough knock them in using a socket on the outter race and hammer. Re-assemble. To get the front end in alignment, install the forks into the triples and leave the bolts semi loose (but still holding) as well as the top capnut, then install the wheel and the triples will align. Then jingle it around and progressly tighten the fastners. |
