Are the trim pieces around the headlights on the *R bikes just held in with some tape? I couldn't find any fasteners and didn't want to just pull hard. My 03 ones are all faded to a dark gray and I have something else I want to do to them while fixing them up.

Double sided tape. I destroyed mine trying to pull them off. Maybe get some fishing line and cut through the tape?

its hit and miss if they will come off in one piece. had some decent luck getting the back side really warm with a hair dryer and being able to pop them of slowly

Mine are so old and brittle it is not much use. There is also no way I'm going to be able to get them back to being black so I better just order new ones.

Can anyone tell me if these parts numbers are still active or provide the updated numbers:

M0064.02A8 BEZEL LH, front fairing, black w/ tape
M0065.02A8 BEZEL RH, front fairing, black w/ tape

American Sport Bike only has carbon fiber ones listed, so I'll have to go to a dealer to get them. For now I guess I just prep the plastic to receive the new ones by pulling the old ones out any way I can. Wish they used a better plastic for these so they didn't fade like crazy.

A quick google shows it as about $35 each which is kind of crazy for a piece of bakelight plastic that will fade shortly. Maybe they won't get put back on and I'll just do what I was thinking on the background plastic.

Krylon Fusion will do OK for now, certainly not going to go with the stock pieces for $70! If I ever do the headlight mod that I want. I think I will need the extra space anyway. We'll see how I like things when I get them done, might suck, might be cool.

were you able to get them off with out braking them? I was thinking of painting mine when I get home to match my red airbox and red windscreen since everything eles is black. Good thing is I have 3 sets of them so hopefully i will be able to get one of the 3 sets off of one of the 3 fairings i have with out breaking them.

Nope, snapped like a twig, but they were 7 years old. Surprised there isn't a cheap cast plastic of fiberglass version for sale out there.

Twenty-thirty years from now when my kids are trying to restore these bikes this simple piece of plastic will be priceless.

Yes, I am serious.

I just would have made it out of something else. No reason other than cost it couldn't be stamped out of aluminum and anodized, that would last a long time and they could have bolted it in or still used the tape. They probably could have molded it out of the same plastic as the rest of the body and given people the ability to have body color trim pieces and mix and match as they choose. And the sun seems to affect the body panel a lot less than those headlight trim pieces. The CF would be neat, but not for the expense, if it was like $70 for the CF I might have thought about it, but the last time I saw a price was over $100 for the CF, and we aren't talking that much material.

Got my plastic ready for paint and going to go spray the first coat right now. Probably be able to cover in two coats, especially since paint is not the only thing going in this space. Paint is mostly just to cover the areas where I can't get the next step to work.

Do they come already installed in a new front fairing, or are the only sold separately?

Not sure I like what I did... Painted the eyebrow area with Fusion black, turned out OK but need better masking tape next time. Then added some 3M black reflective to them, hoping it looks better (brighter) with headlights than with camera flash:

Looks good greg!!! Wish they would fit Sharkskinz...my high beam melted the paint a lil bit right below.

Like the reflective idea!

WOuld look better on a black bike. I'm still trying to track down a wide enough strip of something brighter.

That is without the stock insert since I'm too cheap to pay $70 a pair for two pieces of plastic to replace the old ones. The just black paint looks good enough, not sure if the stickers will stay, depends what it looks like in headlights. New turn signals go on soon too.

Only problem with a white bike is the bugs, and we haven't even come close to bug season yet.

Bugs mess up black too! I keep a microfiber cloth and lil spray bottle of that muilti-purpose Windex w/vinegar in the "trunk" to spray down when we stop for gas and smokes.

Did you take the fairing off or just tape it off? Primer? Sandpaper that shiz up?

Took the fairing off, completely taped off the thing, light sanding to get down to fresh plastic (pretty good since it is hidden from light), and shoot with Fusion satin black. Let it dry a day or two and started cutting the stickers from the templates I made before painting.

If you do this use the sharp edge tape, I just used the blue stuff and there were a couple problems that I had to remove. Getting tape around that odd shape is a fairly large chore.

Sheets of reflective stuff came from Cycle Gadgets.
