My 97 has a tach and a speedo . The dash looks handmade. Did the stock bike have only a speedo ?

It was a kit, a billet dash and a speedo...

All M2's up untill 2001 had just a speedo. 2001 and up had tach and speedo in a black plastic dash, And like Spidey said you could buy a kit with the alum dash and tach.
