Did my 1st oil change today, put in 3 quarts of Mobil 1 oil, checked per revised oil check and still not full. I guess my bike is one of those 3 quart changers. I saw this posted by someone on here!! | ||

Bike was checked per revised oil check... ride 5 miles, keep bike upright, run 3 mins, turn off, loosen dipstick, wait 3 to 4 mins,bike still upright, and check!!! | ||

I wrote about the bike not reading full at 2.7 qts. I've rechecked many times and discovered that the process for obtaining the correct reading is VERY sensitive to the bike being exactly vertical (in both front/back and left/right planes) during the idling_for_three_minutes phase. I ride it 'til it's stinkin' hot, then, to get it exactly left/right vertical, I prop up the kick stand with a chunk of 2x4 and some shims right to the balance point, hold it there with a single tie down pulling to the left and let it idle. The rest of the process for an '09 documented here is self explanatory. If you are truely checking the oil by the revised and proper procedure and after 3 qts there's no oil on the dip stick... i say add a bit more. My bike took a little over 3 qts to get on the dipstick. Maybe 1/4 qt more... oh this is of course with a filter change | ||

Stevek, I also changed the filter, and let it drain for 2 hours and leaned the bike side to side numerous times to get all the oil out!!! | ||

When i do my oil change it was a lengthy process also.. Oil takes forever to drain... lol IMO the dipstick is there for a reason... | ||

I like to take a longer piece of wire and mark it for standard dipstick markings then put that in a bit deeper to see just how close to the bottom of the stick you are. Personally I dump in three quarts w/filter and don't wait to get every last bit of oil out of the three containers and that's gotta be close enough either way. No need to be getting all BMW/Ducati type picky about it. Dump in three and ride it! | ||

Yep. Never have understood the hand wringing over oil level. If it has three quarts in it, it's good to go. | ||

Have you guys seen that there now is a 'COLD' procedure listed too? But the whole set-up is crazy. I just did mine in Europe. I measured the hot oil I drained out and then put the exact same amount of new oil in. Hot out.....cold in. Guess what? 2.9 quarts out (perfect level on dipstick. And 3.38 in!!to get back to the same reading on the dipstick. That was after cranking the engine to fill the filter of course. I have been riding for 42 years and never had such a complicated oil fill procedure. | ||

3.2 metric liters is spot on, not sure about the imperial measurements cos in Australia we have the metric system. Our gallon is different to the US gallon. The 2010 model has a sight glass which makes it a shit load easier than the 09. | ||

Mine never shows any oil when I check it like above. The dealership kept it for a week, rode many miles and says that it is full if you check it like above. they say that is the way it is. They said there are so many nooks and crannys for the oil to hide in, it never fills up to the stick? Oil should not this much of a science to check, in my opinion | ||

Try making the bike "exactly vertical" while idling and measuring and report back. | ||

I was also wondering what it is about the inner workings of Rotax engines that makes it difficult to get an accurate reading on the dipstick. It sounds like Aprilia & Can Am owners have had the same experience. I check tire pressure & oil before every ride. It drives me nuts when the oil level isn't consistent. If the level is down on the dipstick, I need to know if I am burning oil. I want my motor to last a good long time and want to make sure I am maintaining it properly. I wonder if Anonymous could shed some light on this. | ||

A bike without a main stand has to be idled for 3 mins standing upright to check the oil? Must have been a deep thinker come up with that one! The retro fit sight glass means new crank cases, expensive! |
