I recently installed a Special Ops pipe on my bike and I believe I now hear a cough/snort from the airbox while riding at certain rpm's (around 2k - 2.5k). It's kind of hard to pin point the noise over the exhaust sound. Is this normal? Do I have something wrong with my bike? Thanks, Nick |

How many miles have you ridden with the new pipe? It'll take a little riding up and down the rev range for the ECM to learn the new pipe. |

Nick there's a ton of info on this issue on past threads. Use the search function. Short story, this happens to a very large number of xb's out there including mine and there's a few things u can do to treat it: - never blip the throttle - ride the bike to optimal temp every time u ride if possible. Make each ride at least 15 min or run higher rpms if it's slightly shorter. - most important of all, let your ecm "learn" the new pipe. |

@ Blackandchrome Many say the proper break-in is cruising steady between 3.5-5k RPM for 10-20 min. I believe there's a better procedure: 1 Ride bike to an open highway that's relatively uncongested. 2) Ride bike in 3rd/4th gear @ 3k RPM 3) Roll on the throttle taking approx 2-5 seconds to go from closed to wide open and repeat until you are above 5k RPM 4) Repeat this process a few time, the more you do it the more accurately tuned you ECM will be. This should be done after any performance mod or extreme weather/altitude change. I do it almost every time i ride. Post your findings. |

I was always told that the XB ECM didn't "learn" like the 1125 ECM. Or am I mistaken and the newer ones do? My 03 gets that cough in the airbox now and then and I've had my D&D pipe on for more than 3 years. Sometimes its more often, other times I can't make it happen if I try. |

Vortec, the point of the xb 's "learning" is to adjust the bike to new outside air temps/pressures because they're air cooled and have to adjust their A/F values to cope. The 1125's are all liquid cooled and maintain their optimal engine temp that way. two different animals |

Thats what I thought. And we're telling a guy with an XB to make his bike "learn" it wont. |

No vortec, it's necessary for the xb's to learn (his bike), not exactly the same for the 1125's. Everything in this forum is xb specific. Nick, let me know if this helps your midrange "coughing". If not, there's a chance one of your cylinders are running hot due to a bad sensor. I'm no buell tech, but some badwebbers are and could loan you great advice! |

Mine will fart once in awhile too but only when I am riding like an animal on a cooler day and /or I am blipping the throttle like a yellow bus activist. |
