I have an 07 xb9sx and some times when i turn the bike on when the gauge swing from one side to the other the rpm gauge will come back to zero and then bounce up to 3 grand and then stay at three plus for a ride. other times when i take off the gauge will read zero and then jump to what ever and other times it works just fine. what the f can any body help.

You will need the pulse generator tool to troubleshoot this one, might better take it to a dealer that has the tool.

If you have the service manual, and some electronics experience, you might be able to make a little 555 timer device that will generate the pulses.

Either of the above is to help you determine if it is the gauge or the ECM that is having the problem.

I have a similar problem on my 09 Scg. Sometimes the tach will stick, anywhere, even up to 8,000. Sometimes it works fine. Following the diagnostic procedure in the 09 electrical manual, I have pretty much narrowed it to the instrument cluster. The book calls for "approximately 4.0 to 6.0 volts" on tach signal wire (pink) at idle. I'm getting 6.7 volts on that wire. That kind of points to the ecm, but think that number may be in the approximate spec. The other reason I think it is the ic is because the Shift-i shift light/tach I have works fine all the time. I did find a used cluster for $100 online, but I'm going to hold off on it for a while. Hope this helps.
