I have just over 400 mile on my new XB12Ss. It seems that I have been able to pass everything but a gas station. I checked yesterday when I fill up again and came up with an average of 42.3 mpg. Is that average and does anyone know anything I can try (besides slowing down)to improve it? | ||

I have read where the new bikes need a break in time before the mileage improves.I have a 2005 XB12Scg and I average 51mpg.Now I am not an aggressive rider so maybe thats how mine does so well.I do suspect yours should get better after a couple of thousand miles.Oh btw I have 21,000 miles on mine.Peace and grease | ||

05 12R. I also get 51 average. But I'm rompin on it too. Being nice and easy, I can get 60 or so. Can't seem to beat that 60 though...............wait till ya see Froggy's numbers! | ||

You don't want to see my numbers, my 1125R is doing better than that. Your fuel economy will improve as the engine breaks in. | ||

I have a 2008 XB12R, with 14,000 miles. I average between 38-41mpg. The best I have ever gotten is 43. The worst was the first three tanks. It averaged 28mpg, during that time. | ||

My xb9r averages about 50mpg with a best of 70mpg on one highway trip. It has 20K on it, but the mileage has been pretty consistent since new. My 1125r(which only has 600 mi. on it) has been averaging 35-40mpg. | ||

I get 45mpg with in town spirited driving on my 06 12XBscg, but I've just got 3K miles on the bike so far. | ||

My '03 XB9R with 36k: Race kit = 45-50mpg Stock (really) = 50-55mpg Just typical country riding with some testing of the rev limiter. I could get better or worse depending. Still beats the hell out of the wife's Toyota  (Message edited by Livers on March 18, 2010) | ||

My 2004 XB12R got about 43-45mpg at first, and gradually worked it's way up to 55mpg. Even though I added the race kit at around 5000 miles, the mileage kept going up. My best recorded mileage was 63mpg on a long trip, with fully loaded bags and all my camping gear. | ||

'07 XB12STT average around 50mpg, been playing around a little lately 'cause the weather has been gorgeous, dropped it down to about 43mpg. Oops oh well. | ||

'08 12R with just under 15ooo miles. Avg 41mpg when it was new, now it's 47-50mpg. Only thing you can do to make it better is stop paying attention to the gas and ride the $#!@ out of it. | ||

I was getting about 46 last season on my 9 and I have a hard time getting out of the throttle. but I have seen about 38 for a tank, I'm not sure if the front tire was on the ground for most of it though. | ||

Are sport bikes really supposed to get good mileage? Aren't you really supposed to be running the throttle up and down as often as possible? If not maybe a road couch would be a better fit? While I would love to get 60 or 70 out of my 9R, the only way to do that is pure highway at 2500rpm. Throw in the junk 10% gas that I get right now and I think I'm getting 30 which is only as good as I get in my car. Have to see how the oil change affects my mileage. | ||

If you do a lot of short trips so the engine does not ever get a chance to warm up fully, your mileage will go into the crapper. | ||

I have an 03 XB9 and get around 55mpg. It didn't get that good until after 15K though. I'm around 65K now. | ||

My '08XB started in the mid 30's for mileage, and didn't really feel like it was broken in until 5k miles. I now average about 48MPG, with a high of 51-52MPG, and lows in the 42MPG range, depending on where/how I ride. As an aside, a recent moto mag article on the BMW K1300-something had an overall fuel average of 38MPG, so we aren't really doing too bad. | ||

My best tank ever on my 08 12r was 46 mpg, and 90% of that tank was spent over 90mph. Seems to me the hotter the bike runs the better the mpg. I get better mpg when carrying a passenger or flogging the crap out of it. | ||

'08 XB12R 15,000 mi. Mostly freeway average 42mpg. It seems the '07 and older bikes in past discussions always had higher mpg than the '08 and newer. | ||

To meet the new EPA requirements, Buell had to modify their maps and they switched to the new ECM. The results seem to be a universally poorer running motor with worse gas mileage. If you look at all things considered not just C0 or Co2 or No or whatever EPA villain by product of the day was, I don't see how dumping more raw gas into the atmosphere (i.e. reduced MPG) is a good thing. I guess I would need a PHD in chemistry and an MBA to understand. | ||

Oxides of Nitrogen a.k.a. NOX (not to be confused with NOS) increases with combustion temperature. One way to decrease NOX is to richen up the mixture a bit to lower the combustion temp. If you go too far, you bring up the CO level, so it is a balancing act. The new bogey man for the EPA is evaporative emissions. |
