I feel a inspection cover bolt on the primary is starting to let go. It's still holding well,no leaks, but it may not be holding for too many r & r cycles.I just changed the primary oils , and adjusted the clutch. Anyone have any experience for a solution other than replacing the primary. Would a helicoil work in the cast cover? Or should I red loctite a stud in that hole? Thanks! |

They're blind holes ,that's great ! I should have known that, wouldn't want fluid seepage through the fastener holes. Lots of possibilities . No worries I think I have it figured out . I love having conversations with myself! =) |

Since they are blind, if they are big enough areas a helicoil makes a lot of sense. |

You think heli coils will work in the primary ?That would be the cleaner, optimum solution, I'm wondering if the cast aluminum can be heli coiled ? I was thinking red or blue locktite , studs,nuts, easy to look like crap if not done right though.. |

They should hold, but I've only ever done it with larger bolt sizes. Since I've only ever opened the cover once, I don't really have much more of an opinion on it. The only other thing I could think of doing is drill out larger for a press in blind nut along with some good loctite to seal the backside. I have seen some of these blind nuts that are only open on one end so you only need to seal around where it presses in. Final alternative might be to have the case welded so you can drill and tap a new hole. |

Try the lock-tite thread former. Available at auto parts stores, and hardware stores everywhere. Put it in the hole, thread the screw in, let it set up, and take the screw out. If it dosen't work, then helicoil would be the way to go. If you must helicoil, use a brand new sharp drill to drill the casting. No worries. If the blind holes are like the tubers/XL's you can drill through with a # 7 bit and run a 1/4 x 20 tap through it and use a 1/4" longer button head fastener. |

I have done this on my previous XB. I used a heli-coil. As far as using loctite to secure the insert you need to know that the loctite cures in the absence of air between the insert case. Put in in front of a heated to accelerate the process. Once fixed it was better than new. |

Just wanted to point out that Primary covers can be found fairly cheap on Ebay. So, if you do FUBAR it, you can have one for about $100 off of there. |
