From what I understand, they vent to the outside rather than into the motor. Makes for cooler intake air. I am fabricating some new covers myself and thinking about venting out rather than in. |

Venting out is a "good idea" for racing when you are pretty much balls to the wall all the time. No need for fans either, more weight gone... My opinion, it's a bad idea tho for a street bike that may wind up in stop-N-go traffic. Z |

It's a good idea if done right. For racing, there are no fans. And at speed, I was told by the mechanics while at Fontana last year, that venting from the center out works very well. Think about it...where does the hot air go after the radiators in a stock bike, half ends up going into the airbox, the rest is just jumbled around in front of the engine. The hot air needs to have a smooth path out and away from the radiator, for proper cooling. For the street, the reverse flow, the fans get in the way. Ducting could be made, it might take some deep thinking to come up with a fan system that doesn't look like crap, doesn't restrict the unaided (unpowered fans) airflow. I don't think, again, done properly, the exiting hot air will be much of a problem. Unless the driver has shorts on.....! Mike |

I already feel enough heat off my bike. Last thing I need is feeling hot air while Im riding. Now if it made things cooler, I would be on board. That is my only complaint about these bikes. My right leg gets way too hot at stoplights |

Seems you could reverse the fans and like mike1 said revers the flow over the radiators in to out instead of out to in, then the hot air wouldnt go into the engine. |

Why not take the conventional route? Engineers have reasons for everything. Does Court or anyone have an answer on this? |

Just a note guys. Free Spirits had pod covers that were open like the EBR ones. They recently changed them stating that they did not work well at all on the street. I ran a quick search. The scoops from Free Spirits were revised from the open sides to being closed for the street. The open ones would overheat in street use. Yeah, the FS covers were originally just cosmetic and the fans are really only effective at a stop with the engine at idle. At speed, the are scoop is doing most of the work. |

Cataract - Correct. The original Free Spirits setup had no fans and ducted air from the inside out. "No fans" being the key word. Driving down the "open" (no traffic) road, that design worked well. Put in slow/traffic driving...that idea went to hell. Then came the fans...but that didn't work because of their "scoop" design was designed for air flow...the other way. Next came the "add-on" outer scoop...which takes them...right back to the Buell design. They started out with good intentions...just couldn't figure a way for it to work on the daily street crowd. For this summer...I'm just gonna make two small scoops or "ducts"...to reroute the fan air away from the airbox intake (back and down). I haven't been able to come up with a good idea for pushing the airbox intake foward...past the fans and have it look "half way" decent...so..move the hot air away from the engine air for now. Mike |
