What do you currently wear? Have you considered full boots? I have 50,000 miles on my SIDI waterproof boots and love them. Not the best for walking around in, but they are for riding. If I am going to be spending some time off the bike or doing some real walking I swap on a pair of normal shoes when I land. | ||

I currently have a pair of Joe Rocket racing shoes, they are getting pretty worn. I have been wearing my Bates steel toe boots, hard to shift wearing these. | ||

I won't wear anything that doesn't go up well over my ankle. Having caught my foot on a stopped Mercedes while doing 60MPH, I know the real danger is in hyperextension of the ankle or anything down there really. | ||

I have had the waterproof icon boots for about a year and a half, I ride to work in them, work in them all day, and then ride home in them - very comfortable and being waterproof is a plus as I ride in the rain. The only negative to them is that obviously since they are waterproof boots they do not vent/breathe and they get quite hot in even 80-90 degree riding, especially that right foot. I will be picking up the vented icon boots for this summer. | ||

For around the city I wear Icon Super Duty 3's and like them a lot. They have armor in the ankles, toes and heels. They are also comfortable to walk around in. For trackdays or canyon riding I wear TCX Competition S's. | ||

Whats the big difference between Alpine Star Tech 2 and some of the other street shoes? Is it just a style preference? Are the offroads really different? Just trying to compare the bottoms and wondering the meat and potato difference | ||

I like shoes with smooth firm bottoms, when I slide my foot off the foot peg to get under or over for a gear change. boot lugs can snag where I expect to slide on the pedals. Look at the pictures shown so far. the first posting not so much of what i am talking about. Everything after that has fairly smooth soles. The protection issue is up to you at that point. | ||

All the plastic bits look silly to me. I prefer leather boots, mine are at the shop getting new soles and heels. Chippewa, made in the USA.  They do well under jeans or over leathers. I wear them all day, not just riding. Z | ||

Guys, it's truly function over form. Who cares what they look like as long as they protect your foot, ankle, shin, etc? Those "plastic bits" are there to provide protection and they also allow you to customize fit. I like the Sidis like Froggy posted but they're just too wide for my foot. I wear a pair of Frank Thomas boots. | ||

Tbenson, I'd start with what boot brand fits you best and goes from there. Touring boots will work fine but won't offer the level of protection that a race boot will. However, they will be a bit more comfortable and will be a little easier to walk in because the sole won't be as stiff. | ||

+1 on the Sidi's, well worth the $300. I got the Vertigo's maybe 3 or 4 years ago. They suck for walking more than 2 miles, but for riding, I'll take the plastic armor bits, they're usually hidden behind the leather pants anyway. The only time I wear them on the outside is in the 1 piece leathers. I didn't get the waterproof version though. | ||

Once you decide on which style or brand you want, go to New enough leather and look for them good prices and good service. I wear Danner desert boots or my black set ups ( sidi knock off? ) Tim | ||

I have the Alpinestars 101 shoe. Only had them a short time so I can't attest to durability, but they are great for walk around comfort and they seem like decent protection. They are hard to get on and off, but that means they won't fly off in a getoff. I also tried those Icon Accelerants and they were nice, but I was looking for a Tarmac ventilated shoe and the shop didn't have them. I have been using Icon Motorhead boots, which I still like. They are reasonably comfortable and well made. I've been using them for four years, and they are still in good condition, I just felt a need for a new and more comfy option. I would not have bought the Alpinestars had I not been able to try them at a local bike shop, and I bought them there for $40 off MSRP. ($109, down from $149). I love all the options available for internet shopping but for gear, its best to be able to try it on before you decide. Tbenson, I see you are in Central Ohio. My buddy tells me the Iron Pony in C-bus is killer. I seriously need to make a trip down there. He just picked up a $260 Icon leather jacket for $100 from them. Go SIDI, you can replace most parts. Great protection and comfty on the bike, some of the bulkier boots are hard to shift with. | ||

Iron Pony is where I try stuff on for fit, then I order online, if the price is better. Iron Pony does not run as many sales as they have in the past, plus the store cost is usually higher than ordering from them online. Worth the trip for you though, if you have not been there. | ||

I was looking at these for a while but I'm thinking more towards the true race boots like the Sidi instead.  Those are AXO Constructor boots in case you like them. |
