I did, but I botched the primary chain adjustment. I still haven't figured out how to do that, so no guide on that yet. My next guide is going to be an 1125R oil change, that is hell of a lot easier than the XB!

Froggy, not picking on you - just asking - how did you botch the primary chain adjustment? I'll be doing my 1000 mile checks this weekend.

I can never figure out how to do it right, that along with the clutch cable adjustment. Every time I touch it, I make things worse. That is part of the reason I like my 1125s better, neither of those issues exist! : )

The primary adjustment sounds like a pain when you read the manual. You are supposed to measure it at many different points in the rotation because apparently it is tighter in some spots than in others. I haven't checked mine yet but it is on the list for hopefully next week, waiting for a gasket to arrive.

Chain driven bike is the same - though usually I would just take 4 measurements or so, trying to get each quadrant of the chain. This will be a little trickier since the chain is inside the cover.

Froggy, as far as the clutch adjustment, this is how I read the manual... if your clutch slips or drags, first check the adjustment (and I'm assuming if the free play is out of specs, you simply set the correct free play with the adjuster). IF you find the free play is WITHIN specs, THEN you loosen the cable, open the cover, etc. etc. Seems like the longer service manual procedure is meant to "reset" your ability to adjust the system. But... with 925 miles on Buells... what the h___ do I know?? My SV had a similar concept, different set up. If you were unable to get correct clutch action/free play, you could take off a cover and set a particular angle... but most of the time you could tweak it with the adjuster. I'm not having any problems with mine, so my plan was to check/set free play with the external adjuster and be done with it.

Yea the issue I had was taking the measurements on the chain. Not only is it a pain to reach in, I don't know how to measure it, so I eyeball it. Then it comes time to measure another spot, you need to put the bike in 5th and rotate the wheel. Well I need to put the bike in 9th because I lack the strength to rotate it.

So then I because I think its a little loose, I attempt to tighten it. No clue if I actually did anything, so I button it back up and add fluids, go for a ride and get grinding and difficultly shifting. Fun. Loosened it back up, now I think its loose, it just dosen't feel right. I had a dealer do it after and they got it perfect the first time.


Similar story with the clutch. I never touch it be cause every time I do, it slips more and more. Once I replaced a broken cable, it felt fine without any adjustments, but the second I go WOT it would slip. Luckily rather than go down the slippery slope of playing with it, I was with several other riders and Hammer71 got me straightened out.

Froggy this is what I'm doing today:

Rotating in 5th gear; I cheat and do that part midway through a spark plug swap.

/// ALL WITH ENGINE COLD ///

The chain is about 3/8", the right size for the cold specs. minimum. I lift and lightly push down on the chain with a small screw driver. Rotate with tire and in 5th gear till I find the spot with the least play. That is where I adjust it to the smallest cold spec.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention, spark plugs are another thing I won't touch with the soft as butter XB heads.

Only soft as aluminum, I use a hose on the end of the rear plug to thread it in. Put the front in with finger tips. NOTE: USE ANTI-SIEZE ON THE THREADS.

Changing the primary oil is cake. Go for a ride, dump oil, reinstall drain hole bolt with a new o-ring on it, put one quart formula+ in, put the clutch adjustment cover and chain inspection cover back on.

I eyeball the primary chain. If I hear it slapping the primary cover I'll tighten enough that it doesn't slap, but is not taut.
