I walked in to a Northern Tool store today and came across two (last two) clear/white Whelen TIR3 LED lightheads on sale. Needless to say, I bought them because, well, why would one just walk away from that?!

Everything looks very straightforward but I have a couple of questions for anyone that has done an install on or is familiar with these units, mainly about flash patterns and where the ScanLock (white/violet) wires route to. I've downloaded the PDF's for install but those aren't entirely clear.

Do the flash patterns reset or cycle to another pattern when the bike is turned off or if the lights are powered off by a switch? I don't want to have to reselect a flash pattern each time I power them back on.

Also wondering if each light needs its own 3 amp fuse or did anyone just fuse the yellow +VDC lead with a single 3 amp fuse on a run from the battery?

Thanks in advance!

Jake

Hey Jake, I have two TIR3 mounted over my license plate and they are awesome. These are 4 wire set-ups. when you sync these lites, You will have to wire them together, and touch ONLY ONE of the grey wires to 12 volts. (they sync both through the one grey wire), I have the red, in sync at the 3 pulse. I have had many people come up to me and say, "geeze, those lites are brite". I don't have any problem with LEOs, because the reds are not on the front. Once they are in sync, they will stay there, until you put power to the grey wire again. They are a VERY easy install. I have both lites tied into the brake light, (each has it's own fuse, but the current draw is so low, you will not have any problem with the brake fuse). good luck, Tim

Thanks Tim. Where/what did you tie the violet/white lead to? Thats the one thing that has me stumped.

The W/V scanlock wire does not remain connected to anything. You touch it to 12+ briefly to change the flash pattern. Once you find a pattern you like, bundle it out of the way and tape it in place, no contact. Think of it as a switch, not a wire.

You do NOT have to reselect every time you power up. The pattern is stored in the lighthead, and only changes if the W/V wire sees positive voltage.

Hey Jake, I'm sorry, but I am not able to get the answer for you. I'm away from the bike for a few more days. if I can get the wiring schematic I will get back to you A.S.A.P.

No rush Tim. I have a few things to sort out before I'm anywhere near the install project (hopefully this weekend or Monday).

Ratbuell, that's what I couldn't figure out. I can see where having a small toggle/interrupt feeding W/V but tucked away could be fun in order to be able to cycle through flash options depending on traffic conditions...

There's a "sample" setting that will autoscroll through all the patterns, it's last on the list. I think they may call it "random". Set it there and leave it if you want things to change.

Cycling only goes in order - it's a "step" more than a "cycle". Pattern 1, pattern 2, pattern 3....etc.
