hey everyone, wanna start by saying hello and quickly letting everyone know how resourceful this forum has been for me... glad to be able to read up on this bike and read everyone else's problems and fixes- which makes my saga a little less painful!

So a month ago I had never heard of an 1125r... i was pondering the idea of a harley but was leaning towards a buell, as my rationalization behind this was solely to be riding an american bike 883 or larger, for obvious reasons. I went to a party with my old RC and was talking to one of the members who swore by this bike, short story long- I started abusing craigslist trying to find a good deal on one within 1000 miles of me... end up getting a good deal on one at the dealer 50 miles from me, go to pick it up, ride it across the parking lot and it just doesnt seem right. it was very cold up tho (20f) so i dismiss it as such... get it home , decide to take it on a ride, when it warms up its running on one cylinder. dealership gets it back and ends up getting a buell rep on the phone with them yesterday to walk them thru diagnosing whats going on. It is decided it needs an ECM... I'm wondering if anyone has heard of this being a problem on the 08's, or if this sounds odd to them as well... also, they believe the bike to have run fine before they installed "the latest and greatest flash" to the ECM- their words, not mine... my rational tells me that re-flashing the ecm should be a simple fix, and i just cant get my mind around the idea that the ecm could malfunction like that... But i figured I would run it by the experts here to see what kind of feedback i get. Thanks in advance for the help.

You're really at the mercy of you dealer to make a correct diagnosis. If they can't
do that find one that can. It could be as simple as a bad spark plug, or failed ecu flash.
Any input here would be purely speculation.

Cheers

sounds like a fouled plug, try the inbuilt plug cleaning routine, get hold of the diagnostics manual as well as the workshop manual and parts book - all worth every cent/penny

they did replace the plugs to ensure it was not that, i was leaning towards a coil starting to go but im not a mechanic, so i dont know... i agree, definatly at their mercy, just wondering if anyone else has had problems with their ecms crapping out, and if so, what the 'symtoms' were- this one is all new to me as i am more familiar with inline 4's...

I have not heard of one going out, even going back the the fist FI year in 99. That's not to say it couldn't happen.

If they hooked up the scan tool to it and they say it is bad, I guess I'd believe them. Have they swapped it out with a known good to test?

Any electronic part can fail at any time with absolutely no warning.
Having said that... give the dealer a chance to figure it out. It is still under warranty, so if they want to load up the parts gun it is not going to cost you anything. If they are unable to fix it (within a reasonable amount of time), then you will want to look for another dealer that can.

You must of not been paying attention. : )

I have seen a number of failed ECM's on here over the years, usually its older models and vibrations that killed them.

On a brand new bike? Yes its possible, "shit happens" or so they say.

i got a brand new ecm that will not make my bike run above an idle without popping and banging out the exhaust, I know it is the ecm as the original runs fine, as the saying goes "shit happens" i am a tech by trade (automotive) and every so often we replace bad ecm's,bcm's,abs modules, etc.it happens so don't sweat the small stuff....

I haven't heard of one until now. Note that I didn't say there weren't any, just that I hadn't heard of one.

i guess id feel better if i had high hopes for this dealership... they didnt exactly impress me when they sell me a bike that runs on one cylinder, front tire has 5lbs of pressure, and the lr turn signal is dinged off it.... i guess i feel like these are all matters that require attention before selling a demo. i hope it is just the ecm and i get the bike back thursday and have a chance to be really impressed by it... my problem is i buy a 6,000.00 motorcycle and its been 3 weeks ive owned it now and i still havnt enjoyed it- im not happy... i went in there when i was picking it up to make sure there werent any open recalls on it, and the service manager was argueing with me saying there was never a recall on the emissions system on that bike (the whole boiling gas thing being fixed with the evap canister) then 5 minutes later he's sending a tech out on the sales floor to see if its been performed... these guys havnt exactly won my confidence. Again, hopefully I have good news to report on thursday, i guess only time will tell......

There was 3 recalls on the 08s:

5th gear oiling issue
Cam chain tensioner
Brake line reroute

Fouled plugs are normal on new bikes, often times they are started so the customer can hear it revved, then promptly turned back off.

Cam chain tensioner recall was for 09 CRs. It's listed on NHTSA under the 08 R, but in the description it states 09 CR.

There is the NHTSA info pulled right from the site. My 09 was built in October of 2008, so I am thinking that my bike is probably a part of this. Does anyone know what Vin #'s are included in the 140 bikes effected?

There is no recall regarding the evap canister. 08s only had two recalls. The front brake line reroute and the fifth gear thing. Those are the only recalls for a 2008 1125R. Regardless of that, if the dealer wants to put a new ECM in, let them.

ECM reflashes were not recalls as I remember. I believe they fell under safety campaigns (some of them were not even that) which are to be done when the bike is in for service. I believe that the last flash wasn't even in a bulletin. It just showed up on the DTII.

This is the only thing I could find in all the PCs that mentioned emmisions but not a reflash:

2008 1125R VENT LINE, SIDESTAND SPRING AND OIL FILLER PLUG
PRODUCT PROGRAM 0504

which says that California models don't need the vent line relocation because of the canister. They do need the spring and the filler plug.

Hi Hildreth,
Have all the recalls done pertinent to this model year. The most recent flash is very good and takes only a small bit of time. If the dealership is offering to replace the ECM under warranty, let them go for it. I would be sure the replaced ECM has the most recent flash. They can print that information on a hard copy for you to keep.

Regards

They rotated the motor to replace the plugs before trying to reflash or replace the ECM???????

bikejunky, lol... i bought the bike on a friday and managed to get them to make the 1hr drive to come pick it back up the following monday... i literaly bought the bike in this condition.... the reason they did the plugs was to ensure they were not wasting the time they were allotted with the buell rep on the phone with them... their rational was they didnt want one of his first questions to be "did you replace the plugs?" and then waste 3-4hrs of the day doing that before they could diagnose any further.
I have been using the term "recall" loosly- what i should be saying is "work the dealer will perform for free that has been known to be a known problem on these bikes."

Hildreth- I've seen a couple of 1125's run crappy after installing the "latest and greatest reflash." Have your dealer reset the AFV and TPS if they haven't already.
