If you just want to paint them try using fingernail polish. |

If you're going to go through the hassle of changing the LEDs, get a custom background from this guy... <link retracted> Please don't link to this site. Thank you I got one last season and I love it! He' in Europe, so it takes a bit, but the price is very resonable. (Message edited by froggy on March 09, 2010) |

I replaced the three incandescents with some blue neowedge type A wide angle LEDs. These are the shortest LEDs I could find, and they're still a couple of mm taller than the stock incandescent bulbs. There's a bit of a "hotspot" above the middle bulb, but looks much better overall in my opinion. It lights up a cool blue at night to match the City X plastics and other blue accents here and there. If you got one of the all black custom dash board faceplates, I doubt you'd see the hotspot at all. (edited to remove link) I'll try to post up some pics later this week. I'm pretty happy with the mod, and it only cost about $14 shipped for the three wide-angle LEDs. (Message edited by coops53233 on March 09, 2010) |

Sand the LED so that it is less focused, should clear up the bright spot. |

the face plate pops right out, I pulled the blue off my CityX, and got the Orange from a XB9R and got Mr Buell to sign it before reinstalling.... easy peasy lemon squeezy. Just remember to tape all the set screws to the faceplace so they dont walk if you arent doing an immediate change. |

I got these LEDs: http://superbrightbulbs.com/images/auto_bulbs/nw_t ype_b_ss_b_wm.jpg The unit's plastic base is slightly taller than the stock light's base, and identical to the one Al sells at American Sport Bike. But, as you can see in the pic, it doesnt have the tall bulb like the ones Al sells, so you can't/don't need to sand them down. They're literally only 1mm taller than the top of the plastic base. The only way to get a shorter LED would be to find one that uses a base that is the same height as the stock light's base. I searched every LED retailer I could find on the web, but just couldn't find any units with shorter bases. |

There was a big discussion about this last year I believe, and someone found a site that offered exact replacement incandescent bulbs in colors, so there were no LED hot spots (bright flashlight-like focal points). They were cheap too. Try doing a search (I'm too lazy right now...). You DO have to wonder why the heck Buell chose such a nasty color for the gauge lights... it like a cross between a cheese cracker and a manila folder. ~SM |
