After riding about 120 miles today I stopped to show my buddy my new DDM HID's, GPS mount, etc. Low and behold I saw the infamous bubble on the right side of the fairing. Nah, couldn't be...I specifically had told the tech at HD about the spacing problem and he had assured me he had added the 1/4" spacer. Got it home, checked, no spacer...$#!* Now the real fun begins. Contacted HD about warranty and the spacer issued. Told me they were real busy and I would have to bring it in so they could look at it and see if it would be covered under warranty. When I explained that driving in would probably melt it all the way through and I was told that was the only way. I did not want to take a chance without knowing if it would be covered, but was told if I fixed it first and then brought it in after taking photos, the not for sure warranty would be voided? Hmmmm, think I should just take care of it myself or take a chance getting a new fairing? The bubble is about 3/4" x1" and it will need new heat shield installed.

if they installed it it is covered. either H-D will cover it or the dealer will have to,they have to cover their work... |

an example would be like you take your bike in get it serviced and the tech "forgets" to put oil back in it and 50 miles down the road it siezes up...your fault, I don't think so,the dealer is liable and would get to buy you an engine, goes the same with the fairing you expected it to be properly installed,it wasn't,so now they got to fix it that is just the way it is.... |

sounds good Keef...I think its more of having to drop my bike off and leaving it for an undetermined amount of time for something so simple...oh well, guess I got the rest of the year to ride!!! |

Who says you have to leave it? That's unacceptable. They just want to verify the issue. They should let you keep the bike until they have the parts ready to implement corrective action. |

"...I would have to bring it in so they could look at it and see if it would be covered under warranty." Nothing there about leaving the bike. I think standard operating procedure at most dealerships is to ask folks to leave their vehicle, but if you ask to limit the time your vehicle is out of use to you, they will usually concede and schedule a set time. It's always been that way for me. I've never had to leave my bike. |

If it's not far to the dealers why not remove it, ride up there with someone following with the panel and refit it somewhere nearby and ride in... I don't understand how they'd need to see it fitted to the bike anyway, if they fitted it incorrectly then they're liable. If they fitted it correctly and it failed due to a "manufacturing defect" then they are still liable... I can't see how looking at it fitted to a bike is going to tell them that.. I would guess they may want to ensure it's not accident damage, or just hope you won't go in at all.. If they replace it take the OEM heatshielf off and fit a better one, that puffy crap they fit as stock is useless. Mine has the faintest deformity in it as it wasn't fitted correctly by the dealer when new, I've just removed the heatshield, put some better on and added the spacer they never fitted (and bent the bracket they never did).. I'll feed the info back to them next service. |

What is the exact size spacer that is needed? I don't have access to the instructions or my bike for a few weeks and can't remember the bolt sizes. Anyone know (or guess) what temp. the factory heat barrier is rated for, so we know what to upgrade to? Hope the dealer takes care of you Tom. |

I went to my purchasing dealer today to see about my fairings. The bike came with them but theres no (SWR)saying so. Dude says they are obsolete in the system which I already learned from here. If its melted and under warranty yet obsolete what comes next? |

Well, I took it in the other day and was greeted by the Warranty Repair lady. I now pointed out everything in person and it was apparent she was uncomfortable talking to me about problems I was more educated about than she when it came to the Buells. It was almost like dealing with an insurance agent who had been told to deny the claim no matter what the facts were. Then out comes the Buell tech, who is also a Buell owner. Looks briefly, says, "Sorry about that, I don't know why I forgot to put in that spacer...We'll take care of that." The look on the warranty girls face was priceless...the only thing she could do was walk away and say she would get the work order ready. Tech tells me to take it home and ride the sh%! out of it until the part comes in, but when I pointed out my crappy install job of the HID's he just says leave it and he'll clean everything up, update the instrument cluster and hopefully install the REV B! Thank God for a good tech!!!! This also gave me a chance to finally learn how to post pics ups. Yee Hew! |

I'm startin to worry, I bought mine and installed em myself haven't rode the bike yet. Gunna make sure there spaced enough, what is the norm? 1/4 inch?? I also just went and bought some better heat shield. Guy at summit told me its rated to 2000 degrees and it says it but it also says its for and ambient temp of 400 idk wtf what means |

Rockstar: Just make sure the header isn't pressing against the heat shielding. If you're using some thinner aftermarket heat shielding, you're probably fine - the stock puffy stuff brushes against the header, burns, and stops shielding heat. You can also bend the brackets slightly to increase the space. If you smell hot plastic when idling, it's 99% likely your fairings. If you let the bike idle for 5-10 mins with no smell of plastic, it's probably fine. Mine are in the shop now being replaced, supposedly "5-10 days" but I'm guessing closer to 6 weeks. Either way, I can still ride while they're off (enjoying the slightly more naked look, though I really do like how the fairings make the bike look), so I don't really care. |

Also, when you're idling, feel the outside of the fairing. If it's cool to the touch, you're fine. If it's hot, you might want to add more space. |

The key problem is the supplied heatshield is inappropriate to the task. It's "puffy" and airflow past the fairing will make it puff out and contact the pipe. The minute it touches thepipe the aluminum turns to ash. They are so amny different kinds of heatshield it's a mystery why the fairing kit shipped with such utter crap. All you need to do to make sure your next fairing does not melt is put better sheilding on there and make sure there is 1/4" gap from the sheilding to the pipe. I posted a thread on it with pics and links. I've put at least 2000 miles on since I effected my own repairs without any issue. You may want to purchase some heatsheild and when it's time for the dealer to service the bike hand it to the tech and ask if he would substitute. |

So give me the full scoop on this? I just bought an 1125cr and plan on picking it up in a couple weekends. I don't want to burn any holes in my faring. |

i suggest HEADER WRAP to everyone... otherwise the bike is too hot to ride in-town anyways... |

I caught mine just as it was starting to melt through the heat shield. I got my own spacers for like a buck at an auto parts store, and bought a roll of reflective heat tape and taped the whole heat shield. Haven't had the issue since. |

Ryan since you bought a CR you won't have to worry about the melting issue, the lower fairing is an add on that is for the Rs. It doesn't fit the CR. |
